Triathlon Thread

Been fighting a low level stomach bug for the last couple weeks and been pretty inactive. Did some biking and walking, but not full workout level. Tried to do a run at one point and my body wasn’t having it. Finally did a run today, not surprisingly felt wiped after 1 mile, still did 3. Better pace, worse heart rate than 1 month ago, but strictly better than what I was doing in early July. So given the lead up, I’ll take it.

Keep up the good work everyone! I’ve been really lazy lately so I’m hoping you inspire me to get out on a ride soon.

I just had my flu shot yesterday and I feel like crap. I went swimming today but only lasted about 15 minutes vs the 30 I planned. Now I want to go nap instead of my track. UGH!!!

Yeah everything is extensively tested in wind tunnels these days for maximum aerodynamic efficiency.

And those world records were broken by Filipo Ganna anyway.

Oh geez, I’m replying to old posts again :woman_facepalming:

Thanks for the bump - been really only swimming again. Can’t seem to get the run and bike motivation.

Haha, no problem.

I’m not training for a triathlon, but I had a fantastic workout last night so that’s something I guess.

Good luck with your training!

I got roped into doing the bike portion of a triathlon on Saturday. My friend couldn’t make it so I’m coming off the bench. This is not a standard tri - it’s a 7-mile ocean paddle, then a 10-mile trail run, and finally a 15-mile mountain bike ride. I’ll be doing the 3rd leg. Route goes up a giant hill for about 5 or 6 miles, then down a super-fun technical downhill trail, then paved roads back down the beach. Should be a hoot.

Ran / walked 5k this morning. First proper exercise in 8 days (I’m ignoring 2 mile walks from and to the car mechanic, round trip for breakfast, etc.) Should be able to get a bike ride in tomorrow afternoon.

Pros:

  • Actually did something
  • Did an out and back, resisted urge to bail and turn around a mile in
  • Beat goal time

Cons

  • HR was too high at several points. Trying not to let it go too high, hence the walking intervals
  • Need to convince self to go slower, ignore clock while regaining some aerobic fitness

when i was very out of practice, i would do a lot of jog/walk stuff. one minute on, one off. then 2 on, one off. after building to doing 4 on, 1 off i was pretty much ready to just stay on with unpredictable breaks. it’s easier to head out the door in those days when you know you have breaks built in

How high is too high? If you are doing HIIT it’s going to get high but only for a very short while.

This is how I train Couch to 5K people. It really helps non runners to run. A heart rate monitor also a big help. Find the heart rate that you can just keep chugging along and viola!

Did a 6x50m test yesterday. 5 @ 80% (50 seconds per). 1 @ 100% (41 seconds)
:face_vomiting:

Tuesdays I will prolly do mixed intervals like this
Fridays just swim and drills

I must have knelt on something. Right below my right knee (where that bump is) is inflamed for some reason and is in pain. Feels like somebody hit me with a bat there.

Ouch! Hopefully ice and ibuprofen help.

Did first bike ride of the season. First mile sucked b/c not used to it, last mile sucked b/c upwind, but middle was ok. And somewhat surprisingly, actual pace was similar to what I was doing back in September.

Have a 5k tomorrow, so did a bike ride yesterday. Motivation was actually beautiful weather. Was mostly a good ride, headwind in the last mile was so bad that I dropped into the smallest chain ring and thought about getting off to walk.

Went back to masters swim today for the first time since the pandemic. I knew it was going to suck 100 yards into the warmup, but it’s a start.

Yeah! They’re aggressive!

I’ve been doing some technical drills again. If my forehead is halfway out of the water, I am more hydrodynamic (faster). Plus, my shoulders aren’t fully underwater, and the stroke mechanics are way more efficient. I can accomplish what I used to do in 30 minutes in 25’ish now.
