Then dont be so cheap as to fly the lowest level coach

You’re going to have to take up that complaint with the SOA, I’m afraid.

It’s worth asking the question: why is “my comfort trumps your thrift” a more valid position than “my thrift trumps your comfort”?

I’m sticking to my assertion that if your big coat is one of your two pieces of carryon luggage, it should have equal status as other carryon luggage: it can go overhead if it doesn’t fit under-seat, if there’s space available, and if it fits within the permitted dimensions for carryon luggage.

But I do also think it’s good manners to accept small sacrifices, within reason, to accommodate others. I do it for others, and I appreciate it when others do it for me.

Maybe you could buy a coat that isn’t so huge for when you’re traveling? Or I bet if you bought a first class ticket, you’d be fine. There is always extra storage space in first class, and they don’t let anyone else use it.

Airlines have crammed more and more seats into planes and aren’t able to expand the overhead bin space, so on almost every flight I’ve been on, people have to check their carryon bags. That’s because the airline is greedy, so let’s blame them instead of people who can’t afford to upgrade. And there are also options people have recommended that would allow you to get your coat up in the bins and your book bag under your seat - unless you want both items to go up in the bins, which shouldn’t be permitted regardless.

…unless you’re in a bulkhead seat.

It was going to be negative temperatures at my destination, so not sure what you’re even suggesting there.

Why is it that 2 items that are a smaller total size as one rollar suitcase “shouldnt be permitted regardless” exactly?

In my example though you’re not allowing me one coat with no other things in the overhead even though i checked everything else. Very selfish of you

Still haven’t seen lucy admit that the flight attendant was rude to close all the overheads rather than help me find a spot for my coat. Selfish of her. Her stuff is safely in the overhead so fuck my needs

I have a coat that isn’t ginormous that protects me from very low temperatures and fits under the seat in front of me, although I like to wear it the whole time because I’m always cold.

The airlines make the rules that you get one item in the bin and one item under the seat, not that you get some total volume for the overhead bin. They don’t let anyone put two items up there, even if the total space of the two items is smaller than the maximum. Getting everyone onto a flight while trying to enforce a rule like that would take way too long.

I have no problem with your coat being in the overhead bin. I’m trying to be helpful in recommending a way for you to make that happen within the confines of the current structure, but it seems you want existing rules to not apply to you. I am afraid I can’t help you, then.

No, they thanked me volunteering and said better luck next time. They were waiting on an international arrival but they didn’t get there in time.

They still have that. It’s for first class.

I certainly hope they photocopy the exam papers before they distribute them to graders.

They do. And there are two graders. But back when we graded on paper we were required to show up with that huge stack of paper with our notes, and we were explicitly told we weren’t allowed to check that bag.

I agree that “exams” is not currently an issue. But “there are people with stuff that they can’t afford to check (for reasons other than cost)” is still an issue. “Medical devices/drugs” is probably the most common reason, but there are others.

Yes, agree

This is a crappy attitude though. She’s not being an asshole. Everyone should be allowed an item in the overhead irrespective of what that item is. If ao_fan was bringing a rollerboard AND her coat, that’s one thing. But when she’s bringing a coat instead of a roller board it’s totally different.

I was watching the local news and some woman was trying to find her checked luggage at an off-airport storage site because SHE NEEDED THE MEDICATION SHE PUT IN THERE!!! :man_facepalming:

To be fair, that’s precisely what ao_fan is doing. Blaming the airline for having a ludicrous policy.

Except ao_fan’s complaint is that she is being denied an item in the overhead bin. Which is a valid complaint IMO.

Lucy offers a practical solution that has the added advantage of protecting ao_fan’s coat. It’s the solution I would choose, largely because I would want to protect the coat. But I don’t think she should be required to jump through that extra hoop if she doesn’t want to.

No i did have a bag too. A backpack. And lucy just called me an asshole.

No, i said that you look like an asshole to the flight attendant. I was going to add that i think you should be more sympathetic to the flight attendants who have no reason to think your request to stow your coat was even reasonable, and who are closing the bins because that’s part of their job.

She did have an item in the overhead bin, her backpack.

To be fair, she wasn’t. After the bags had been stowed, the flight attendant did let her stow her coat, too.
