Transgender trends and politics in the US

I suspect this story is going to be all over the news for the next few years.

Seems like a real mess with the murder victim being trans, a NYT employee and reportedly allowing his son to try on dresses. Add on an on-going divorce, multiple complaints about child abuse against multiple people, multiple restraining orders against multiple people. Also, it seems like the couple was initially a lesbian couple. Seems like a made for TV story.

we have friends who’s daughter is married to a woman. They have a boy and a girl. And both kids are deliberately being raised as…not sure how best to describe it…as being able to choose their gender stuff. Like, the boy is offered boy and girl clothes.

Is it what I would do? nope. Am I angry about it?..lol not even a little bit. it’s not any of my business to tell other people how to raise their kids and frankly, people that think about stuff like this domain deliberately. and that’s better than the way most people raise their kids which is with absolutely no direction at all.

I live in Dublin, and have been to that park recently. As you might imagine, there is a lot of talk about it here.

It is a pretty crazy story. Initial coverage did not mention that he was trans and instead focused on the in-laws taking turns shooting him angle, along with the broad daylight in front of many families aspects.

That’s how some of our friends’ families are. I view it more like “not enforcing that your kids fit societal gender expectations”.

If my boy like trucks, cool, get him trucks. If he likes dolls… am I going to tell him, “No, that’s not for you, you can’t have fun that way?” A lot of parents would.

I remember my parents telling me I had to behave my gender. It sucked and even if I feel fairly healed from it, it’s firmly stuck with me. It instilled some homophobia/transphobia and self-repression of my own interests, among other things.

When my daughter was born, we made some effort to not force her down the Barbies and everything pink path, for the reason you mentioned. We had a variety of “boy” and “girl” toys. Our idea of the “blank slate” was quickly squashed. Right from the start she was drawn to the girl toys and never to the boy toys. Definitely NOT a blank slate. It has definitely affected my view on you are what you are, and not, say, what you’re “groomed” to be.

The fact that the feds also only offered 1/3 of their usual funding is noteworthy. Let’s massively increase defense spending but cut spending on vets who need it.

It’s been the Republican way since Reagan, maybe even before that.
