Today I learned

Interesting. Post COVID, I get a lot of people not showing up for scheduled calls. They just ignore me.

Pre COVID, that happened extremely rarely. Like almost never. They book a call for 10am, they were there. Now, they’re not.

When I was doing my masters in music back in 2008 in California there was a middle-aged woman visiting from Switzerland attending classes for one semester. She organized a traditional Swiss dinner party for 8 at her house and was astounded when 2 people didn’t show up - no phone call, no text, nothing. No-shows would never happen in Europe, she said. California was ahead of the curve, I guess.

It’s like a Newton-Leibniz…

My old house is just a couple of miles from the Altadena CA fire. :open_mouth:

This is why I stopped organizing game nights.

My ex SIL was the worst at this. There was about a 75% chance she’d be too sick to attend any gathering. One year she had pies Ubered to Thanksgiving dinner - partially eaten.

I’d like to flake out at my own funeral.

Yeah, but people should NOT respond “yes” in the first place. That is the real issue. Along with the extreme selfishness, there is the underlying wanting to be invited. You say “no” too early, and you get put on the B or C list.

Worsening public services, he felt, also forced people to do more childcare, eldercare and self-care. “So that person is supposed to show up for a park walk with an acquaintance on a rainy Tuesday evening because they said they would? Nah.”

YES!!! A-HOLE!!!

This was my initial reaction too. But upon reflection I could maybe see doing this.

Suppose that I truly intended to come to NA’s Thanksgiving dinner with three pies. Day before I get the third pie into the oven and … whoa… I don’t feel so good. Yikes, I have a fever.

But now I have three fresh pies and there will be no dessert at Thanksgiving dinner if my pies don’t get to NA’s house. But I worked so hard on those pies and now I don’t get any?!?!

Well I’ll just mask up and wash my hands and pull out two pieces from each pie for myself and send the other 30 portions of pie to NA’s house for everyone else to enjoy. I’m too sick to drive, but Uber can deliver.

I could see thinking those thoughts. I can’t think of any other scenario besides illness or maybe some family emergency that would justify this.

If I just … changed my mind… that’s crappy.

Nah you just send 2 full pies and keep one for yourself. Partial pies is just weird

At first I thought you meant there was a half eaten slice with teeth marks but I guess you meant slices were missing.

So did anyone eat the pies?

But I made one apple (NA’s favorite), one pumpkin (Mr NA’s favorite) and one lemon meringue (favorite of both kids). So who do I slight by keeping their pie?

Obviously if I made 3 pumpkin pies I’d just keep one and send 2. Or if I’m the only one who likes apple then I’ll keep that one. Or if there’s one that I don’t like then I’ll send that whole.

I’m assuming they’re all different and preferred by different people in attendance and the baker likes them all.

(I used to make a pie that I don’t like for Thanksgiving dinner when I lived near my cousin. It always got eaten because other people liked it.)

There were fork prong marks in them, so…partially eaten.

Seems I responded to the wrong post, sorry.

I assumed the Uber driver was the pie thief.

Which is exactly what they both claimed!…until they got a divorce and two years later my brother admitted they just didn’t feel like coming and decided to get high instead.

Flawed story because apple pie is never better than pumpkin. Especially but not exclusively at the holidays!

Which explains the fork prong marks.

The flakiness of the pies led to them flaking.

This is how far behind the times I am. When I was playing the game Whentaken (guess when and where a photo was taken) today, the kid in the photo was wearing crocs. Having just bought my first pair (wearing them as I type), I thought must be in the last 5 years or so. The photo was from 2006!
