Presbyopia comes from the same root as Presbyterian. The Presby part meaning “old men” because Presbyterians are governed by the elders of the church. And Presbyopia is “old men eyesight.”

Nice claim to fame. Up until now, the only thing I’d ever heard about the zoo was that it housed the last known passenger pigeon and the last known Carolina parakeet.

I looked it up to make sure I didn’t remember wrong, and learned this interesting extinction fact - after the pigeon went extinct in its cage at the Cincinnati zoo, they moved the parakeet into that same cage. So two species went extinct in that same cage.

Wow, that’s sad.

They’re one of the better zoos out there. The Cincinnati Bengals derived their name from the Bengal tigers recently (then) acquired by the zoo.

They’re also known for having to shoot their silverback gorilla, Harambe, after a kid got into the enclosure.

And more happily for miraculously saving the life of Fiona, an extremely premature baby hippo turned social media star.
