Thread where actuaries diagnosis medical issues

Well, I’m having surgery. I could do other stuff and then have surgery later if needed, but I’m done with the wait and see approach.

So, surgery August 25. Hoping to fly cross country for a meeting Sep 27. That’s doable, right? Can I take a knee scooter on a plane?

Eta: google says yes.

Sorry, but at least it’s likely to fix it. What’s the recovery time like? Any time off work?

i brought crutches on. they get stored during flight. I could not put any weight at all on the leg, so requested the seat that was one hop from the lav. good times.

2 weeks off the foot. I can work from home but it’s going to depend on how much pain medicine I’m taking. Surgery on a Friday so we’ll see how I feel but I’ll be surprised if I’m not working full time pretty quickly. The second weekend is Labor Day so that works.

Then 4 weeks I can use the knee scooter and drive. The trip is close to the end of the 3rd knee scooter week. Then another amount of time with a boot.

I’m curious what I should plan for as far as work after my ankle surgery. I’ll be home for 2 weeks. Will I still be on prescription pain meds Monday after a Friday surgery?

Looking back, for other surgeries I was off pain meds but usually had to take a week off bc we didn’t have WFH back then. I remember planning my daughter’s birthday party the week after gall bladder surgery, and realizing that doing laundry was a big mistake.

I was a lot younger with my other surgeries too—I think it’s been 15 years.

possibly off pain meds. hard to say as it depends on complications, tolerance, etc.

if you took a couple days as sick time, no one should begrudge that. if you wfh for a bit after that, just make sure that you don’t overschedule with meetings or committed deliverables early on - you might not feel up to it.

Yeah, I might go ahead and schedule myself off that Monday and Tuesday just in case. I do have back up, which is a huge luxury. I’m accepting meetings as tentative for now.

2 more days. I had expected to keep up my walking but it’s been way too hot. Guess I’ll walk in November or so. Found some upper body stretches I can do so that I’m not a total slug.

Mrs. VA and I will do a couple of laps around the local mall.

Sam’s Club/Costco could also work as well.

My advice is not to work until you are off opioid pain killers. They can mess up your judgement.

and my advice is to take as few of those as you can.

Agree with both Lucy & tommie. Pain meds usually make me sleep anyway. In the past I’ve usually graduated to ibuprofen quickly. But I have no plans to be a hero. If I need them I will take them.

I walk the halls at work when I go to the office. The mall/Costco are too far.

I did walk the dog this morning. Man, she has some bad habits. Hopefully next week Mr aj can start back up with the daily walks bc she needs them.

Back from surgery. Cartilage was more messed up than he expected. Had a smoothie with pain meds and about to take a nap.

Be careful on those pain meds. You might accidentally post a pecker pic from the bed.

Showing the important identifying mark for actuaries, I see.

Hope the recovery is speedy and coherent.
