I heard there were fires in north Kihei. Lahaina appears pretty much gone, but I’ve heard reports that the banyan tree might make it. It’s not much but it’s something.
Oh, when they said it was smoldering I assumed that it must be dead. Even if the tree doesn’t burn up, could it really still be alive?!?!
I really hope the banyan survives; I just couldn’t imagine how that would be possible. I would love to be wrong, of course.
BTW, STBX proposed in Maui which has prompted my little brother to accuse me of setting the fires.
Obviously I did no such thing, but the place where STBX proposed has gone up in flames, just like the marriage.
I read that it has a chance and they are hardy trees. But I’m not any kind of expert.

Lahaina isn’t even on the map. It just no longer exists. 
The one labeled south Maui fire hit part of Kihei, but it seems just the parts really far north where there aren’t many buildings etc. I think, just looking at the NASA fire maps.

I went to a destination wedding in Maui and remember bar-hopping across Lahaina and I think all of those places are gone.
Kimo’s, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Wailoa Church, the courthouse, Pioneer Inn, Baldwin House, Fleetwoods, Maui Jim’s, Lahaina Pizza Co, Whaler’s General Store, it’s just so many…
And 80 people died too.
