Things you learned embarrassingly late in life

when Sir Mix-A-Lot talks about how his “anaconda don’t want none,” it isn’t literal because he isn’t a herpetologist :grimacing: :man_facepalming:

I grew up in the midwest, and nobody was very adventurous when it came to food. I didn’t have a shallot (that I know of) until I was like 30. Didn’t know what ramps were until I was closer to 40. There were no Indian restaurants anywhere growing up, didn’t have Indian food until I was out of grad school.

Oh, and I just learned last year that paprika is just dried bell peppers, or some other closely-related pepper.

Turns out Sylvia Plath didn’t roast herself to death. Like, back in the day ovens used gas (do they still? never seen one) and it was gas that killed her.

Oh wait a sec, I knew there were gas ovens. The thing I didn’t know was that you could turn on the gas part without heating up the oven. Because I had a gas range once and you couldn’t turn on the gas without turning on the fire.

I had no idea!

Ok so I grew up with homemade hamburger helper type meals. “Mexican food” was spoon tacos with fritos for a base, and “Chinese food” was Chicken Chow Mein from a can.

I’m not embarrassed about this tho. It just is.

I didn’t know what a bagel was until i was 19 and went to university. I was initially puzzled to see people eating donuts for breakfast.

I loved that stuff as a kid. With the La Choy soy sauce. You’d have to pay me good money to eat a plate of it now.

And tamales from a can. I also had a penchant for Mexican TV dinners.

It was a different time and place.

Despite working at a pizza restaurant in high school, it took me years of failed attempts to make one at home. Now I can make some pretty awesome pizza. Last night was stuffed crust for the kids and a nice basil mushroom with goat cheese (the newest favorite) for the adults.

My issue wasn’t donuts for breakfast, that was fairly usual where I grew up, but these donut were just horrible. Tasted like really dense bread. Then I was told you smear cream cheese on them. That helped.

What’s your delivery radius?
