Things to consider before building a house

cool panic room too.

or…50 years later, haunted house material

to add to that idea

I’ve always wanted a room say like, on the second floor, that can only be accessed through the third floor perhaps through a secret stairwell.

If you’re still interested in building your empire in the 'po, here is a really cool listing with an underground tunnel to the carriage house:

Not if you have a hot water heater. Showers are not JUST for sobering up with cold water when you have been binge raving all the cool new club drugs. Some of us use them to, you know, wash ourselves.

that’s cute!

I lolled and Mrs G asked “what?”, so I read it to her. She said “I’m no scientist, but that seems like 101 to me.”

I’m guessing this is a Catholic house from the room with all the saint statues and crucifixes.

Elevator!!! :white_check_mark:

This house is in my hometown, if I ever moved back, I’d want that house. It’s been under reno’s for 40 years, but man, I love the spookiness of it.:

Definitely need a secret passageway from the Lounge to the Conservatory on the far side of the board, er, house.

And since I’m strolling around the town, always nice to see how the rowhousing I grew up in is doing:

They must’ve cleaned up for the google car, last time I went around that neighbourhood (last year) it was way worse than that. Hoarders everwhere.

I’m a huge fan of second empire and Italianate and that’s right in my sweet spot. Still has the iron fence, she’s a beaut. 10/10.

I’ll bet that trailer is bigger on the inside that it shows on the outside.

Right, @Doctor_Who?

Yeah there’s normally people sitting in their underwear in lawn chairs our front, every front door open, etc. It’s normally a lot more shocking than that.

Agree. We bought a house with a wired system but I don’t have a tuner that I can connect. I may some day get around to that, but I have a network of wireless speakers inside and outside the house so don’t really need it.

That looks like the house the Addams family lived in, at least in the original CAS Addams cartoons.

I had to look it up, very similar. I guess old houses with the towers can look creepy, I think they are really beautiful. Not all second empire homes had the tower, those were reserved for the rich. I also like both the look of the mansard roof, and the functionality - you can use most of the square footage in the attic. Though many/most of these had slate roofs, so not exactly cost effective.

There is a smallish (2300 sq ft) two-story red brick second empire in my town, it has a decorative tower but no actual third floor. It has the original iron fence, working shutters, and a slate roof. My wife says we are never moving again but if this house comes up for sale that will get debated. It’s just the right size and the yard is decent. Two car detached garage. Anywho. /architecture nerd

towers are awesome. If I could live in a castle I would.
It needs electrical and plumbing though.

Most had toilets, would this work?

I have seriously considered having a crow’s nest added to the top of my house, just big enough to sit in, with windows in all directions and a light. It would look bizarre on my house, which isn’t anything like the style of house those belong on. But it would be neat to sit up there.

From how you described, you seem like you live in a $$$ and big house. That FCAS money.
