The Thanksgiving 2023 Discussion Thread

I’m still stuffed but now I’m thinking about having a slice of pie.

I could’nt find the red pop out “the turkey is done” indicator on my bird while it was cooking even though I saw it when it was raw and later saw it when I was carving (and also know that it’s not a reliable metric)…so at one point I randomly decided to check the temperature…it was exactly 180 degrees as Ms Stewart says it should be…sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Still thinking about pie.

Because some of you are celiacs or for other reasons? My son and one SIL are celiac so we always provide gluten free options.

We had pumpkin and apple, plus a tuxedo cake (there was a birthday happening as well). All tasty. Kinda full now.

Yes. The food has come a long way in the last 20 years.

My SIL who is celiac is also sensitive to nightshades, is lactose intolerant and is a vegetarian. Really restricts the food options! When he and his family lived with us for a year, my diet really changed to accommodate him! For my son, we always have a G-F option available when he visits and that is no big deal. We now know the good and bad G-F items.

Thank you! Apple pie is awesome! Not quite as good as my pumpkin chiffon pie, but pretty darn good.

Standard pumpkin pie is gross.

My local funky hot dog joint sold tofurkey dogs for a while, now they sell veggie dogs that are soy-free instead, but I actually really liked the tofurkey hot dogs, far better than normal hot dogs (of which I am not a big fan). But I would talk them up so much that other people would try them, and…it seems like an opinion only I have. That’s alright, more for me.

Not sure how I would like tofurkey on its own, though. Probably wouldn’t. What I liked about it was how much lighter it was compared to a greasy beef dog, and how the other toppings (sriracha cream cheese and roasted red peppers for example) popped.

But I would be happy to eat these by themselves!

What is “Americanized” Ground Beef? Not familiar with that expression north of the border.

Old El Paso taco seasoning on ground beef (actually ground chuck). The kind of tacos we’ve been eating since the early 80’s. Similar to a better quality Taco Bell taco.

The other meats are a little more street taco style using prepared pepper pastes, and guac, pico, pickled red onion, sliced peppers, tomatillo sauce are more varied than typical for my family.
