The Kids Thread

My kid asked me what a holocaust is and I felt like crying for the first time in a decade.

Admittedly also a symptom of severe insomnia.

Her: Hey did you know about these gray spots on the wall…

Me: No, I never noticed them.

Her: I don’t think it’s dried up snot…

Me: No, I think there’s too much for that. Do you put snot on the wall?

Her: Not usually. Also I haven’t really been here that much, I was just thinking about it…

Me: I don’t know, it looks more like a splatter to me.

Her: Could it be paint?

Me: Maybe… but it’s coming off… and it’s not a paint color.

Her: I don’t think it’s spaghetti.

Me: No, definitely not spaghetti.

Her: Could it be mold???

Me: Yeah… hmm… there is a pipe that leaks behind the wall… it could be damp there…

(shit, how does my 5 year old daughter already know about bathroom molds???)

Her: I think maybe a bad guy was sneaking into our house in the middle night. And he was going to put mold onto our food. But he accidentally went into the bathroom instead, and then tripped and fell over, and the mold went everywhere.

The flip side of this is her occasional g&t teacher sent her home with a really nice volume of grimms, including some… uh… less appropriate tales? That’s gotta take some balls.

Explain “g&t”, please.

My kids are out of college and back home, paying rent. New abbreviations confuse and anger me.

Gifted and talented. I don’t know anything about it. I appreciate that you are too old to learn acronyms.

Maybe grandkids soon!?

That’s one reason, ND!

Thanks, SV. My wife was in one of those tracks, read a lot of “advanced” books. She is now a librarian at a middle school.

Well if you think the Grimms are not going to teach her useful lessons that she can carry with her as an adult… I could give her ASOP’s fables instead.

My husband bought these magnetic fidget cube things. My sons were playing with them.

6yo: This looks like the inside of reality.

9yo: But it looks messed up.

6yo: Yeah. Just like reality.

I think he thinks he is a mature adult (what kid doesn’t?). He told me today he was disappointed in me. He contorted his face into a sad face, like mine looks when I tell him I’m disappointed by something he said or did. He thinks he can parent me.

This is going to be very problematic when we get married someday. Although he hasn’t mentioned that in a while…he might have moved on.

So your first thought was gin & tonic, but contextually it only partly worked?

This afternoon we were watching “The brave little toaster” and the cartoon rat was talking about abandonment.
me “do you know what abandon means?”
kid “What?”
me “It means when you’re sad because you’re left alone. like if you were left alone by your friends, or by someone you love.”
kid “Oh like if you left me alone”
me “Yes, except that we would never ever abandon you. because we love you.”
kid “except when you die. then you would abandon me. All parents abandon their children when they die.”
“Uh… yes… that’s true.”

Dominate him while you can in Super Mario, those days don’t last long.

He’s already catching up to me. He beat super Mario bros 1 all the way through last week.

No kidding. I can’t even play halo with my son. He just destroys me.like I used to do to him.

My 6 year old asked why the Moon has dark spots on it, but then wasn’t interested in the answer instead hoping to hear about the day before Mom and I got married… BUT this morning she eagerly asked me to read her a children’s book from her school library all about Marie Curie

My daughter just cleared 4.05m on pole vault. She was already likely to go to nationals this year, but on the cusp. This pretty much guarantees it.

NCAA Div II for anyone looking at heights/rankings.
