The Kids Thread

For g&t, my kid had kid-NaNoWriMo last month, in which she struggled to write 1500 words over the course of the month. This month she randomly just decided she wanted to do it again, but with 2k words. And is still editing her old “novel”. And randomly started learning html on code academy? And is trying to prepare for some dumb musical? So much drive?!

I expect it to dissipate soon, but I do wonder if it will be a part of her?

My daughter did the adult version for years (maybe still does) and was the local chair for a couple years. They would have a 24 hour write-a-thon each year during November and start at a STBX, then drop in to various places for a few hours each including the public library. She would easily get her 150,000 words done each year and most led to published material.

Text from my husband: “I went upstairs to use the bathroom. I was up there for all of a minute, I came down to Older Son wrapping Younger Son in scotch tape and Younger Son completely fine with it. I told them it really worries me that neither of them stopped for a second to consider whether it was a good idea.”

I think without seeing some horrific movies/news, I would find wrapping someone in scotch tape pretty funny too.

Our little one just graduated from reception and did very well on her report card. Teacher was very happy with her progress.

Trying to add a bit more fun science stuff for her so got her a Hologram Projector this Christmas for her room so she could replace her stars motif (she has had the glowing stars since she was 3).

You can project the Solar system, Moon, Earth, Milky Way Galaxy etc onto the ceiling. Really great visual aid, and she is fascinated by it.

We are passing by Brussels in January, so have decided to stop off at the Euro Space Center nearby (similar to Kennedy Space Center in Florida) for her to do some of their child activities.

My kid believes she can do basically anything at a professional level, which is super annoying. In part because it devalues the work people do to master skills. In part because she quits things when they turn out to be hard. In part because she thinks the world has nothing better to do than listen to her crappy singing.

Otoh, she told me today:

There’s always a tiny voice inside me saying “you’re doing so good.”

And I briefly imagined what it would be like to actually have self-confidence.

My oldest is like that sometimes. She has tempered it over the years, but she has way more confidence than I ever did. It should serve her well as long as it doesn’t get her into trouble somehow.

My kid’s self-improvement odyssey continues.

Her new after-school routine is:
Homework, story writing, educational reading, code-academy, “karate”?

Still not sure if I should be proud, worried, or trying to redirect her energy towards something else. My after-school routine was always: TV, video games, more TV.

depending on how the karate is going, you should be careful with any attempts to redirect

Encourage excellence and committment. I’d probably be rewarding them.

Kids are little biological weapons.

Did anyone else go through a 6 year old’s phase of insisting on trying on every pair of pants they own, every morning, only to decide that none of them ‘feel good’, and subsequently settle for the first fucking pair picked out to start this whole charade?

lol

Not as such but definitely days of “a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear”.

This drives my wife nuts. Our little one is 5 and every morning is like a battle to get her dressed up. So much complaining.

Most of my kids are fine about it but my 7 year old daughter is very this. On some days she just decides she doesn’t like how most of her clothes feel.

We have similar struggles sometimes. I’ve had the most success in somehow trying to turn it into a race or other competition.

And one by one, the options disappeared from the closet/drawer. Hmm, you must’ve outgrown it.

My son has suspected ASD (I also have ASD) and doesn’t like the feel of certain fabrics. So yes.
