“Sorry, we are saving money and not giving away aid. Good luck!”
Looking at the USGS earthquake site it says that 12 minutes after the 7.7 quake hit, another 6.7 aftershock hit. Then over the next 13 minutes 4.8, 4.9 and 4.9 aftershocks hit. That had to be wicked scary.
And in the last 6 days there have been 5 quakes worldwide over 6.0 (the 2 listed above count in that).
2 more over 6.0 in the last 2 days. One in Japan today and one on the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge.
When you consider that one and the one on the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge they are happening all over the place in semi-unusual places. Yikes.
Yesterday a 6.9 quake in the northern Atlantic. The one that was in the central Mid-Atlantic Ridge was what looks like south of the equator while this one looks to be on the line between the eastern most part of New Foundland and the British Ilse.
I think this link with give you "Significant Worldwide quakes in the last 30 days. Though it lists a 3 in Cali that were only 3.9-4.0. The rest were all over 6.0 but I’m not sure it is all of the ones over 6.0.
So is a 5.2 in San Diego just nothing to even mention?
I have a coworker in Carlsbad, she messaged me. She was like, might have to pick up my kids from daycare, not sure what protocol is. But she has lived there a long time and is used to them. Wild.
I guess I grew up in Kansas and I’m pretty much used to tornadoes.
Pretty amazing the video of the elephants forming a circle to protect the youngest during the quake
Elephants circle during earthquake at San Diego Zoo Safari Park – NBC 7 San Diego.
I didn’t hear about it, though my wife got a warning text.
Maybe mine was off, or i was away from my phone.
It’s rare that anyone feels an earthquake here. Many people felt one in Atlanta this AM, but I did not. It was a 4.1 magnitude with its epicenter in TN.
Still trying to figure out what actually happened, but as I was flying out of a midwest city on Delta on Saturday, I learned that the first flight out to Atlanta (I was not going there) had been canceled and no one really knew why. There was talk of mechanical problems with the plane. The later flight to Atlanta was moved to the same gate as mine at the same time. On the way onto the plane someone said the Atlanta problem was that it had been because of the earthquake.
Blamed on equipment and thunderstorm issues. No attribution to earthquake.

I realize this is a very old post, but there is some evidence that depletion of reservoirs in the CA central valley may lead to increased seismic activity.
Somewhat related: saw this graphic in a propublica story about the depletion of underground reservoirs. The Central Valley is now 30 feet lower.
Here’s another tie in between climate change and other disaster risks:
EDIT: If you want a layman’s explanation for the physics of a tsunami, it’s constituting a significant amount of filler on the newscast on the second link.
hope everyone in the potential paths is spared from serious harm ![]()
Seems like the tsunami wasn’t too big so far in Hawaii and the West Coast. Japan got hit a little harder, but not so bad either.
This Russian island got hit hard:
an 8.8 is maybe the biggest I’ve heard of in a long time - is that an accurate memory or am i forgetting things?
