The Daylight Savings Thread

Interesting. Those areas where this, and I quote the link, “totally made up scoring system” say to always use DST should simply (spoiler: not easy) move over one time zone. Those areas where this map says to abolish DST should stay in their current time zones. Those in the middles should do whatever they want, because I don’t care.
And, the map really shows how far west SF is from LA. Fun fact: Lake Tahoe is directly north of… Santa Barbara! Moving SoCal to MST does make sense (to my wife, which means me).

Ohh, cool tool. Using it, It tells me that I live solidly in a “keep the current system” area, which is, indeed, what I favor. But it also shows that even with my dawn-weighted preferences, there’s a big chunk of the country where I would do better to abolish DST. Not parts I’ve ever lived in, but a lot of land, and some of it is pretty heavily populated.

And mine said abolish, which I favor.

I live right on the line between no change and use DST.

Aligns with my preferences

Rock Around the Clock would probably still work, right?

You get some weird results if you set sunrise to the earliest and sunset to the latest (and sunrise and sunset are equally important) where there are random sections that differ from the surrounding area.

Here’s mine:

The main issue at the moment is that no place can permanently move to DST. The current process is to move to permanent Standard Time AND apply to move to the time zone to the east of them. There might be an optimal order.

Making the whole country move to one or the other is dumb. The proposal helps me, but pisses off about 50% of the population.

Can you name any political proposal that doesn’t meet this conclusion?

This is pretty close to mine as well.

I would say it’s not asking the right questions. “What is the latest reasonable sunset” would be my priority. But regardless, I am in “abolish DST” territory. As is my hometown.

An interesting thing happened the other day. I was driving my SIL’s truck from Las Vegas to Albuquerque and when I entered AZ it said I had entered a new time zone and did I want the computer to automatically adjust the clock. I said yes and nothing happened. Then when I entered NM it just changed the time without asking me.

There’s a switch for that.

Huh? Like on the tool? I didn’t see that option. Just earliest sunset and latest sunrise.

But it’s the latest sunset that causes me the most pain.

It’s the third question they ask:

But i think twig is concerned with the sun setting too late, not too early.

Twig, move to the eastern end of a time zone. Any time zone. That will help you.

Huh?

I’m still not seeing latest sunset in your screen shot.

Correct.

Yes, I’d do better if I moved further East in the time zone or if my area would switch into the time zone it belongs in.

But I also dislike changing clocks, so really, permanent standard time is ideal.

Just tell it that “Sunset is very important to you.” That will help it prioritize what you told it about when you want the sunset to be.
