Yeah a fair point. We really need a good way of disabling nukes…
Sure, this is true, no question. But I think the Ukrainians are also not wanting to give up their land. It’s an awful situation for them to be in, no matter what the outcome is.
The UN should not have been encouraging the non-Russian republics to give up their nukes. (I honestly don’t recall exactly how it went down, so I may be misstating somewhat - feel free to correct me… I was a teenager at the time. I just recall it was being hailed as a good thing that the number of nuclear powers didn’t increase by 14 when the USSR split up and I had a sense that I didn’t really agree.)
I think the goal of resisting, in any war, is to cause pain. Not to win, but to make it so the aggressor isn’t happy about the outcome.
While I think Russia might march into Kyiv without many casualties, hopefully the act of holding Ukraine indefinitely will be difficult.
When I think of our failed wars, I think in many cases, we actually did achieve some goal of making it less worthwhile for our enemy.
I mean, I certainly don’t want the world to end in nuclear holocaust over a petty conflict.
I’m not sure that America ever entered a war that it didn’t think it could win.
Sure, we lost in Vietnam and Iraq II, and didn’t achieve every objective in Korea.
But I don’t think at the outset that anyone supporting the war was saying “no, we have no chance, but we’re gonna put the hurt on them anyway.
At least, not for the wars we lost. There may well have been people saying that about the American Revolution, which was a somewhat different category, and which we ultimately won, thanks to the French.
This is true, but also, nobody wants to say that.
No, but if Ukraine had nukes I think Russia wouldn’t feel like they could get away with bullying them like this.
Yeah, I understand. I still worry. People play with guns often enough and eventually someone gets shot.
I doubt many were even thinking it… again with the exception of the Revolution.
Maybe some Rhett Butler-like person in the Confederate South too, but not technically US at that point.
With Zelenskyy in charge it’s weapons of laugh destruction
It appears that the Ukraine Air Force is severely compromised so the combination of Russian air supremacy and their massive ground presence will make this a short war. Sadly, it is inevitable that Zelensky will be replaced by a Russian puppet.
Continue to hope that casualties will be minimal.
Sanctions really need to be ratcheted up. Canada unbelievably still imports large amounts of Russian oil despite being a net exporter of oil itself.
Wow, that’s interesting. Why?
Look good/bad to whom? The people who like Trump are going to like him whatever happens or doesn’t happen in Ukraine. And the same for people who don’t like Biden.
I’ll guarantee that this invasion did not increase Trump’s standing in my eyes, nor did it decrease my view of Biden.
At Putin’s age I don’t think anything threatens him anymore. They have all the resources they need with China and both countries have nukes. What can actually deter them from doing anything?
Ukraine is going to wind up looking like Syria - just a pile of concrete rubble.
Same for me.
I can see for someone like my Dad who dislikes Trump personally but voted for him twice on the grounds that his policies are better than those of Clinton/Biden (according to my Dad) this maybe impacting views on Biden and/or Trump.
I haven’t discussed recently with my Dad but my Dad’s general view is that we need to protect all of the former Soviet republics from Russia so he probably supports US boots on the ground, I’m guessing.
He probably thinks Putin wouldn’t have done this if Trump were still POTUS. I’m not sure I’m informed enough to have an opinion on whether that’s true or not.

I’m as anti Trump as one gets, and even I believe this to be true. At the very least, I think more material action would’ve come from Trump before this point.
Wow, that’s interesting. Why?
Quebec would not permit an oil pipeline across its territory to move Western Canada oil to East Coast refineries. Those refineries need imported oil as a result. Crazy, eh?
Sigh, not looking forward to Ukrainekuo(s)
