So uh, do you guys think Putin will invade Ukraine or what

If the reports are true that Hamas and Israel might have a cease-fire in place as early as Tuesday, Trump will take “first day” credit for something war-related.

If Putin attacks the US because he says he’s fighting Nazis, I guess it would be true now…

Cross post to political truths that aren’t funny.

I know, it’s Newsweek, but I don’t want to take the time to find another, non-paywalled source.

tl;dr: (If true and agreed to) Ukraine recognizes Russian sovereignty over occupied territories, gets continued American materiel support, doesn’t join NATO, but can join the EU. Russian energy exports to Europe resume, but surcharged with the proceeds going to Ukranian reconstruction. Sanctions on Russia lifted after 3 years of good conduct. I.e., Putin mostly wins.

Ugh…

Shouldn’t be hard to convince Russia to accept that. Too bad for Ukraine though.

Well that will teach those Russkies they can’t bully their neighbors any more,

Still don’t understand the ultra-MAGA crowd’s obsession with not only seeing Ukraine as bad, but also seeing Russia as good. (Although I think part of it might be the conspiracy theory that there’s some CIA-run bioweapons lab there.)

I assume that blocking Ukraine from NATO is a Putin non-negotiable. (Nevermind keeping the Ukrainian land that he fairly stole.)

Pee pics?

I’m not certain, but I suspect:

Russia = good because it rejected Communism and it’s led by a strong, alpha male leader, and successful capitalists are seemingly in charge. Russia can be pictured as being in opposition to the kind of globalism seemingly being promoted by liberal elites in Europe.

Ukraine = bad…well, in fairness, post-Soviet Ukraine was a pretty corrupt place, some of which Hunter Biden does seem to have had contact with. Part of the reason Zelenskyy was elected was his promise to clean up some of the corruption, an effort that he’s apparently had some success with (or at least the appearance of success, given the invasion as a distraction).

Ukraine’s unfortunate background and position in opposition to “good guy” Putin, combined with conspiracy theories latching on to Hunter Biden’s woes at a time when Trump was in competition with Joe Biden and MAGA’s reaction to claims of Russian intervention in support of Trump, and eventually garnished with the school of thought that the US shouldn’t be throwing money away in support of other peoples’ wars…and Ukraine starts to look like a bad guy to some.

That there’s been some Russian efforts to sway some Americans’ opinions through social media and fringe (or not-so-fringe) news channels probably hasn’t hurt.

Are there any provisions to prevent Russia from invading another location after it’s had a chance to rebuild its military?

I have a guess as to the answer to that question, which is probably the same answer to the question of whether there are provisions to prevent further Israeli settlements in the West Bank or further Palestinian attacks on Israel.

This isn’t strictly a reaction to Ukraine anymore, but since I shared it earlier in this thread:

Don’t forget this, although most are not carrying it to this extreme. Basically if a country is involved in mass murder but is anti LGTBQ it is a better place to raise your kids.

In the future, Leo and Chantel plan to get Russian citizenship, because they know that in our country traditional values are protected by the state. They say it is safer here, the level of education is better, large families are supported," Volk concluded.

This may not end up as they had hoped. Maybe ten years from now the iwel-educated kids will look at their not-overly-bright parents and say “WTF were you not thinking”

So it looks like Trump and Putin are going to carve up Ukraine.

Putin gets his extra territories (and then spends a lot less on his military canpaign that is bankrupting Russia)

Trump gets access to Ukrainian natural resources.

Zelensky will be very angry over this one (obviously Ukraine is the clear loser here and I am sure Putin will advertise this)

The EU is also going to be angry.
