Get some sleep.
Just woke up, thanks!
It looks like they will be expanding on the pre-existing war.
That is, the Eastern-most chunk of Ukraine has been rebelling since 2014. Russia has been sending money, weapons, officers, soldiers, passports? Now Putin wants to declare that region independent, and then would “defend” it against the Ukraine. With a lot more soldiers.
This involves 2 states, each with a couple million people, and a steel/coal industry. So I imagine? it would be somewhat similar to conquering the Crimea. Of using an overwhelming force to claim the territory.
But there’s still a question of how much war they want to have.
You can’t invade something that’s always yours
…or at least something you say has always been yours…
And they’re not “invading” . . . they sent a “peacekeeping force”.
I feel confident that enforcing the newly recognized countries’ territorial claims will be considered in-scope for “peacekeeping”.
That doesn’t sound like a rebellion to me
I could see Putin just officially taking Donbas, Crimea etc. and pulling back and everyone is like woo diplomacy worked. Meanwhile he was able to officially annex the regions previously involved. Then in 5 years we go round 3 and “ethnic Russians start rebelling in eastern Ukraine”
A lot of folks in America forget/weren’t aware that 8 years ago, Ukraine was proposing legislation that was problematic in the eyes of Ukrainians who are of Russian ethnicity.
I don’t think that justifies the events that followed, but the context helps create a more understandable picture.
You misspelled “asskicking.”
Well, by that definition, there’s no such thing as a rebellion.
But it’s been a while since I’ve looked at the history of tried to understand what anyone is fighting for.
This certainly fits with Crimea and Georgia. And I’m not sure how the world should respond to Putin conquering cities every 5 years. It’s not exactly a world war. More like collecting Risk Cards.
when he gets to 5 and HAS to turn in a set, we are screwed
Right wing media seems to be going all in for Putin so that they can attack Biden.
Just surprised that Tucker didn’t also say that the invasion wouldn’t have happened if Trump was president.
I think that was the Hannity spin.
Not surprisingly. Just sorry that I missed that. ![]()
Agree
Putin is playing a long game. He doesn’t want to deal with directly controlling all of the Ukraine now anyway, so he’s happy to get a few pieces of it and leave it be for now.
Whole thing makes Ukraine look stupid for having given up the world’s third largest nuclear arsenal in the 90s. If they’d kept even a dozen or so they’d still have Crimea and Russia would know better than to fuck with them.
Certainly encourages anyone else out there thinking about it to get some nukes. Only way to guarantee territorial integrity
