So uh, do you guys think Putin will invade Ukraine or what

I think the idea is also if they can have a solid land link in the south then they can push up the center of the country to encircle significant parts of the Ukrainian military fighting in the east.

They’re sort of attempting Blitzkrieg on snail mode.

I don’t think they’re trying to take the whole country as much as they are trying to remove the current government.

Yanukovych, the pro-Russian President who was overthrown with Euromaidan, was seen in Belarus with Russian officials, begging speculation that Putin wants to put him back in Kyiv, with a spin that this is all a restoration from the EU/US-influenced usurpation years ago.

This is what I would expect as well. If the Russians can cause the Ukrainian government to fall and then replace it with a Russian puppet government. That puppet government would then be willing to agree to let Russia annex the land that they want.

Yup, Install puppet government.
Puppet makes deal with Russia for “peacekeeping” assistance (i.e. suppress dissent).
In a few years manipulate a referendum to actually annex Ukraine.

Does anyone else see comparisons to the Revolutionary War here? Like will Ukraine be free forever if they win this war or drag it out long enough for Russia to give up or ditch Putin from power?

It could have parallels with the 1939 Finnish-Soviet war - Winter War - Wikipedia

Is the US free forever? Elizabeth II is getting up there in age and who knows if she wants to reunite the British Empire.

Guess this war in Ukraine gives more evidence to the idea that without Lend Lease the Soviets would have been toast.

Maybe the Finns can use this opportunity to seize Karelia back.

Except that unfortunately ukraine doesn’t have an ocean to separate it from russia. or powerful, sympathetic members of parliament to help protect it. and russia took off the kid gloves after just a few days, while it took the british much longer.

I welcome rejoining the UK

If the US rejoins the UK, does that mean the US finally gets real Cadbury chocolate instead of the Hershey-manufactured abomination?

The UK just left Europe, I doubt they want the US back.

Why wouldn’t we want one of the world’s largest economies back under our control again? We wouldn’t have left the EU if we controlled it.

They already tried that in 1812!

OK you’ve convinced me

Yeah, but narcissist’s hate being embarrassed and they have definitely embarrassed Putin. This is the main hope I have that Trump won’t run again. He can’t stand the thought of losing again.

Interesting article detailing how coverage isn’t focusing on Ukrainian military wins (instead on civilians killed by Russian strikes)

Is Ukraine winning though? I follow Asian news too, and it’s not entirely apparent which side is winning based on the reporting.

A lot of feel-good stories coming from Ukraine, but also a lot of reports of how dire the situation is for Ukraine and how much help they did.

Right now it’s a stalemate. Russia is having heavy losses and isn’t advancing further. Meanwhile Ukraine is holding their own but they don’t have enough force to get the Russians to leave.
