Google has a lot of data about car-accessible territories, though.
yup. i’m all for competition in this industry. Tesla is the current leader in self driving for consumer vehicles in the US.
I wish Tesla would get to hands-free highway driving. I don’t mind city driving, it’s on the interstate where I’d love to have the easy button - I know, keeping a hand on the wheel isn’t a huge inconvenience. But Ford, GM, and I think Mercedes now have hands free highway driving. At any rate, I like Autopilot, I can focus a little more on traffic, or looking out for deer in the rural parts of my state, or whatever.
100%, it’s interesting how differently Waymo and Tesla are approaching this. Waymo is going somewhat methodically, very limited service areas. Tesla is hoping that at some point the AI/LLM/whatever it is will figure out enough about the rules of the road to be able to just get it right everywhere.
Mercedes has a level 3 system, which is arguably more capable than Tesla’s level 2.
Does AP require hands on steering wheel? FSD doesn’t
but not on city streets, only on select roads, and at speeds under something like 40 mph (in the US). so yes, more capable under strict conditions, for now
Will FSD let you do hands free on the highway?
Yes
I should have known that, I only had FSD for one month, but I did get a taste of it.
Hands-free is possible if your eyes are on the road ahead. Sunglasses, or hat that prevents the inside camera from seeing your eyes will disable hands-free. No word if these will defeat the surveillance.
true, but misleading
yes, i will get an occasional prompt to apply a slight nudge to the steering wheel if i’m wearing sunglasses to confirm i’m supervising, but FSD was never disabled. head motions indicating the driver is checking side and rear view mirrors reduces the frequency of prompts.
sure, i can ignore all prompts and FSD will eventually disengage. putting on a pair of sunglasses or a hat won’t trigger an immediate disengagement
Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives good context. i only have internet and acquaintance data.
Riding in a Waymo again. First time in a while I’ve got one instead of a human driver.
i updated the software to the latest version today and had two interventions with FSD
attempted to make a u turn where such turns are prohibited. i took over and reported it to Tesla (driver is prompted to send a voice message to the engineers after manually disengaging)
tried to pull into my next door neighbor’s driveway when returning home
otoh, it waits for driver wishing to exit a business parking lot and lets them in, moves over for merging traffic, picked good parking spots at the gym, costco, sprouts, pawn shop (looking for a chain for a medallion i bought in greece this year - dang, even 10k gold is expensive!)

Waymo vehicles don’t currently know what to do when the traffic lights are out (treat as four way stop)
According to Waymo they do know how to handle disabled stoplights, but they sometimes phone home to double-check what’s going on. And since there’s a ton of Waymos, this instantly overloaded the system.
I don’t know if driving around during a disaster is all that necessary, though definitely they need to figure out how to not stop dead in the middle of an intersection.

I heard this on the news the other day.
i like driving but i also like FSD (Supervised).
97% of the last 967 miles were on FSD. no long trips but a mix of hwy and street travel
i hope Rivian can make a go of it. great vehicles but software capabilities have some catching up to do
That, and service. I’m a huge fan of Lucid, gorgeous cars. But if your Rivian or Lucid breaks, not a lot of service centers. I don’t know, maybe they send someone?
Tesla has service centers all over plus mobile service. The spoiler on my car was loose from the factory, I submitted a ticket in the app and two days later they fixed it at my house.
But yeah, I’ve heard the Rivian software is buggy.
Still glad I am Lucid enough to drive myself.
