Self-Driving vehicles

Purchased a 2026 Tesla Model Y in July. FSD (Supervised) is very, very good. No other manufacturer worldwide produces a consumer car that can drive itself almost anywhere it’s legal to drive without being restricted to specific roads or pre-mapped zones.

Never gets tired or frustrated or distracted, doesn’t suffer from highway hypnosis or road rage, sees way better than I do at night and in the rain.

Looking forward to what V14 brings.

So, if you bought the Tesla, does that mean you didn’t go on the Japan trip? Or are you doing both?

We went to Greece instead this year.

Well you need to come join us in the EV thread, in the tech section!

I’ve had a Model Y for almost three years. On the highway the self driving has been really good for me, I’ve had the phantom braking twice but other than that it’s been perfect. Now in the city, I was not impressed. Tried to go over a concrete island, almost ran me into someone’s front lawn once, went right when it said it was going left (and going left was the correct move). That was all in the span of the week I used it, lol.

Which is fine, highway driving is where you want it most. Overall I’m really happy with my car (well, except for the owner of the company), I don’t see why I’d ever go back to an ICE car.

Are you on HW3? City driving has been fine for me on HW4 and FSD (Supervised) V13.2.9. Yes, I’ve had a few manual interventions, but that’s to be expected.

Not sure how much I’ll post here or in the EV thread. People here have fallen in love with nazi/fascist/swasticar language (not just in the EV topics) <this space reserved for “dOn’T bE a FaScIsT nAzI then!!!1!” comments>.

I mainly use GoA to see how people with particular viewpoints speak and think. It’s a little like visiting the zoo.

I have HW3, mine was a Feb build in Fremont, as I recall. I don’t know what software version I’m on to be honest.

Have you done the math on what charging costs? Including all fees and taxes and what not it costs me less than $10 per month to charge at home.

Based on what a friend tells me who is on HW3, the FSD performance improvement on HW4 is significant. And I believe the HW3 vehicles are limited to V12* software.

I read somewhere that some HW3 vehicles might be eligible for a chip upgrade to HW4.

Home charging costs are definitely cheaper than gas. I think I pay about $0.15 per kWh.

I had to look my rates up again, the fees are higher than I thought. We have a ‘time of use’ plan and I charge overnight for about $0.07 per kWh all in.

Charging my e-bike’s 500 Wh battery is basically free.

I’m glad you’re lurking, even if it is just to point and laugh. I feel like one of these days the shooting is going to start, and so many folks will only see the other side through their propaganda channels.

I looked at a time of use plan but it was almost impossible to compare plans with my provider. I did find a blog post where a guy in my area did the comparison on his use pattern and it turned out to be either a wash or more costly.

I’m not here to point and laugh, although that happens sometimes.

People love their silos.

That sucks. My utility has a tool that tells you, over the past year, what you’d pay under each plan. It was about a wash for us to switch, but by shifting charging and laundry into the night, and tweaking my AC settings, we will come out ahead.

Most posters here love their silos. At least as far as anything political goes.

NHTSA is investigating FSD after a bunch of crashes. I am a bit impressed that they are independent enough to do so.

I’ve never been in a Tesla, but my guess is they are fine. They do a lot of miles and do not cause a statistically significant number of accidents or fatalities. Even not trusting Tesla’s data, I think it would be known by now if FSD was a public safety hazard given the sheer number of vehicles out there.

This actually made me look, and this thread has been remarkably free of political comment or friction prior to this comment. Maybe the last remotely political comment was a year ago, and certainly not on this level.

I’d encourage you to point this out when it happens outside of political topics, and if you jumped in there I think you probably found what you were looking for.

By “here” I meant mainly “this site” and you’re right that the most politically oriented posts are in the political topics.

“you probably found what you were looking for” What was I looking for?

I think he means if you clicked on a thread in political topics, you would very likely see political things discussed and that’s probably what you were looking for given you clicked on a thread in there. I don’t think it there is any underlying subtext in the post, just pretty much direct meaning. Am I missing the point of your question?

I’m not clear on what he is saying so asking for clarification. I wasn’t looking for anything - I was just reading threads. Is that what you mean by “looking for”?

Seems like the right interpretation. It seems reasonable to expect that choosing a particular section to read means you have an interest in what that section has in it, or are looking for content that meets that description.
