Sad thoughts

:therethere:

Sorry to hear that, dude. I hope things get better.

My dad’s home town has been evacuated because of a fire. I’m related to a huge part of the population.

I’m probably not far from that, am I?

I’ve seen a number of FB posts of people I know who moved up the canyon and are now being evacuated.

With some posts in Sports and Political about CTE recently I will add here that a HS classmate just lost her son who had played college ad pro football as an offensive lineman and had a number of concussions to suicide at 38. He had retired from the NFL and was now raising a family and coaching HS football in Idaho. There is suspicion that he had CTE.

Incredibly sad.

100% suspicion.
It is sad that people would put their kids into football for ANY reason when this is the likely outcome.

Was thinking about this today for some reason. Life is too short.

  1. Cousin Fran is in the hospital: she has been fighting a leg infection for the last couple of months and just had a root canal that went horribly.
  2. Neighbour had a heart attack last week. He called an Uber  :man_facepalming: to take him to the hospital: it got there in 4 minutes, but still :man_facepalming: . He was seen PDQ, got a stent, but is now gonna need bypass surgery.

I just vacationed at the place i have been vacationing with my family since i was 10. Other families also have long histories at the place. One guy, called Stroker, who was a “big kid” when i was 10, and who has been coming every year, and was also a volunteer who ran the maintenance and is responsible for most of what has been built or repairs in the last 35 years … He’s dying of prostate cancer. They had a sign up asking people to send him post cards, and “think of you” notes. And little wooden signs saying “Stroker’s handiwork” and “another improvement by Stroker” scattered all over the place.

I asked if he’d like me to visit, and he said he has too much pain for it to be worth it. His nephew was on vacation with us, and he’s still able to see family, but he has to limit what he’s able to do. He’ll be dead by next year.

That’s sad for a bunch of people. Our neighborhood pool had a guy like that. Many of the little improvements that weren’t done by professionals and tons of maintenance were done by Mr. Larry. He passed away too young, but his influence was felt if not known by many.

As someone whose prostate cancer was caught early, I am always saddened to hear of others who were not as lucky. Very sad for him and his family.

This is a sad thought, and an angry thought, but right now sad…

This past week I completed my required ethics training as a public employee. It saddens me that the laws exist and yet as you move up the power food chain they are applied less and less.

I don’t know much about my paternal grandfather. He died when my dad was 8, and my dad had a really hard childhood. Like, foster care levels of trauma. He’s not the most emotional person, so he hasn’t talked about it much. My grandmother died when I was maybe 8 myself, and she wasn’t around much before then. My dad was only in his early 30’s when he became an orphan.

My parents are on a trip right now and they must have stopped in Rhode Island because he sent a picture of his dad’s grave. I have a soft spot for Robert Frost, so I appreciate the epitaph.

He died at 38, of pancreatic cancer. I looked up his life, and his wife at the time of his death, my dad’s step mother (not that he’d claim her as such, she was the reason the kids ended up in foster care) died last year in her 80’s. She spent over 50 years as a widow, her obituary claims my grandfather as the love of her life.

I’m sad that it’s a painful memory for my dad. And I’m sad that he’s so closed off about his life. I wonder if he will die before I get a chance to really know him.

My cousin-in-law was recently hospitalized and discovered to have kidney failure and pancreatic cancer.

Well, damn. That’s a bad one. What’s the prognosis?

There’s a nice walk if you’re ever in Vermont that’s near his cabin and the woods that inspired him -

it’s definitely complicated. Still waiting on a PET scan, but imaging thus far suggests it hasn’t spread beyond the pancreas. They’re also trying to figure out timing chemo with the timing of dialysis. I’m uncertain if there’s been any improvement in renal function. Given normal labs a few months ago, there was hope it was acute renal failure that could be reversed.

Four of my cousins have died in the last few months. Sometimes it sucks being this age.

The one that died today was almost 95 and she was great until the very end. That is a silver lining at least.

My FIL’s sister died recently, she was in her 60’s. It must have been sudden, because she was present for my FIL’s final days and was in decent health then.

I never met her and my husband wasn’t close with her, but my FIL died last year after a long battle with Parkinson’s, and their mother died a few years before that. She also had a son who died suddenly a couple years ago, and her husband died during Covid. She still has a daughter living, and a younger brother too, but it feels like my husband’s family is kind of vanishing.
