Sad thoughts

My mother and siblings just did a group call to remind me that we need to do a memorial on the 15th for my three older sisters that were killed in the mid 70s by an IDF group doing special exercises around the border of South Africa and what is now Zimbabwe. My dad refused this thing for his entire life. If you wanted to see him angry you would start this issue. I dodged this thing for years but I guess it is overdue.

The sister just older than me was my best friend then and it took me a while to understand what death was. She basically was my carer. Sometimes I wonder how she was so mature and I guess my bias towards female leaders comes from her.

Will spill a good whisky for my sisters (zvishonga matondo: those that made the world beautiful. Part of our totem poem) that have lead the way and drink a bit on their behalf today. In African culture/religion everything has to be shared. You can’t just enjoy yourself. The brother who lives near me invited himself to my place since I moved here so I have a 24/7 wingman.

:rofl::rofl:Will spill bourbon to give those thirsty ones a taste of something they don’t know.

ETA: it is considered extremely bad luck to enjoy anything by yourself so most times in Africa a person opens a bottle of alcohol and pours the first bit onto the ground. There are cultures where your first salary goes to your parents.

Culturally insensitive joke, but it’s Great Britain, so who cares:

An Englishman, Irishman, and a Scot walk into a bar.
Each orders a whisky, neat.
The drinks arrive and each person discovers that there is a fly in their drink.
Englishman tells the bartender: “Please take this away and pour a new one. Thank you. That’s a good chap. Cheers.”
Irishman looks at the fly, shrugs, takes it out, and drinks his drink.
Scotsman looks at the fly, picks him up by the wings, and yells, “SPIT IT OUT, SPIT IT OUT!!”

I don’t know if you know the African beer that is unfiltered (chibuku is the well known brand). It attracts a lot of flies and other fruit flies that go for rotting stuff. It is a standard thing to just remove the flies and continue drinking.

I will not share a lot of the additives some people add that they think make the beer tasty. One item that made me not ever drink traditional beer is some people put children’s napkins believing it would make the beer taste great. If the urine is acidic this is like adding a Lemon to Corona.

With the added bonus that the children’s napkins start to smell like beer and when they grow up they will be drawn to beer because it reminds them of their childhood. A win for beer producers.

Sunday we visited my wife’s BIL in the hospital going through an experimental treatment for his stage 4 liver cancer which is supposed to increase his odds of some survival basis from 50% to 75%.

Then yesterday she found out another BIL has stage 4 lung cancer with a difficult prognosis.

Another BIL recently (maybe 6 months ago) completed treatment for prostate cancer, though his prognosis now, I believe is pretty good.

The work of science is to substitute facts for appearances and demonstrations for impressions.
In the last ~48 hours, you’ve posted 23 times.
I’ve  'd 13 of them.
Of the ones I didn’t…four were in TV/movies, where I don’t frequent; two were about personal things that I have no business commenting on; one was on management, which I have no knowledge of; one was on alcoholic drinking, which I have little experience with; one was on some food I’ve never heard of; and, finally, one was about coca-cola vs pepsi, and, [sarcasm beyond all sarcasm] quite frankly, if that’s the way you feel about it, I don’t think we can be internet friends anymore [/sarcasm ends here]…besides, :mtdew: is significantly better than :melloyello: and it’s not always offered when coke is, so that makes it even worse.

Perhaps there’s some PBNH (posted but not yet hearted) that still need to develop to ultimate.
