Running thread

f)(^!@#^ KNEE! Was as normal on Sunday and Tuesday. This morning, while running a little faster in my neighborhood, and heading downhill, the same f)(_@#%in’ sore spot started yelling at me again! Feels like crap now. And might impact my training in a couple more days. Damn, I hate a persistent issue that just won’t go away.

I’ll join in on the knee hate. I have a spot at the back of my right knee that keeps getting sore when I run. I guess I have to lay off it for a while. I only made it 2 miles yesterday before it hobbled me.

I went on a 30 min run this morning. I don’t think the patella strap did anything. Knee is bothering me a bit this evening.

I had runners knee a couple years ago and the strap did nothing for me. It may have even made it a little worse, or I didn’t know how to wear it.

We don’t have a dedicated cycling thread, so:

So, when is the first race?

Will this give @NerdAlert more encouragement?

CNN confirms

Still sounds completely made up, from 10 years ago.
CNN seems to have run out of news they are allowed to cover?

The race was Jan 16, 2016. The CNN story I said was confirmation was last updated Jan 25, 2016, So I don’t know when CNN originally covered it, it was at most 9 days later, not 10 years later. WSAV-TV in Savannah GA also confirmed it, Jan 26, 2016

Eh. It’s very tRump.

Meaning a lot of bullshit and no one asking more questions, cuz it’s a great story.

And, who fucking cares?

8th 5k of the year is tomorrow. I got in a couple of slow, short runs this week. I’ve been taking it easy out of both laziness and fear of my knee(s) flaring up again. I expect a horrible time tomorrow, but at least it looks like it won’t be raining.

Crisp, sunny morning, and it was a trail course, so conditions were perfect. It was a small group and unfamiliar course, so I figured I’d pace myself behind a middle aged fat guy. Joke was on me, because his pace was faster than anticipated. I forgot to time myself, but results should be posted later. Now I’m just waiting on a piece of frybread from a Native American vendor at the following celebration.

I’ve worked my way up to running 9 miles on Saturdays. Assuming I don’t get sick, I’m planning on doing a half before the month is over.

You can do it!

I’ve worked my way down to only 2 runs in the past week! I have a half-marathon scheduled for Saturday. I got an 11-mile run a month ago, but since then I hurt my knee again and have had to back off training. I am confident I could do the 10k without hurting myself again, so I am about 80% sure I’m going to have to drop down. Still have another day to figure out how to mollify my ego (which still wants to do it, damn it!) and ensure I can run in November and all of next year rather than just this one Saturday.

Another 5k today. Parking was going to be tough, so I parked at my brother’s house, which was a few blocks away. He decided to unofficially run with me, which was great. I have another 5k in a couple of weeks, and I think I’ll go ahead and register for 2 more that I was thinking about. Assuming nothing goes awry, that will make the 12 I was hoping to do.

Then you will be no longer under 12.

I ran 10 miles today so I think the only thing that would stop me from doing a half would be getting sick.

13.1 rounds down to 10, so who’s to say you didn’t already do that half?

Saturday’s 10k went great! Weather was perfect - 48 degrees when we woke up, 50 at start, no more than 55 by the end. It’s a mostly flat course with the first 2 miles on a downhill, then a steep uphill to get back to level, then fairly even back to the start. Goal was to get <10:00 / mile pace, as I did that for a 5k back in June and am hoping to extend that speed to a half-marathon by next spring.

I have my watch set to half-mile splits, as that feels like regular enough to keep monitoring pace, yet not so frequent that I end up overwhelmed or unable to actually adjust.

segment total distance pace +/- overall target commentary
0.5 0.5 9:54 (0:03) good start! even with the crowd
0.5 1.0 9:30 (0:18) starting to feel the down slope
0.5 1.5 9:17 (0:40) definitely feeling warmed up, we’re definitely downhill
0.5 2.0 9:34 (0:55) at the bottom of the valley, feeling comfortable
0.5 2.5 9:47 (1:01) consciously slowing down a little, preparing for the hill that is coming up
0.5 3.0 10:39 (0:40) yup, this is a steep uphill; several walkers
0.5 3.5 10:04 (0:38) reaching the top of the hill
0.5 4.0 10:04 (0:36) tracking through an out-and-back spur; I gave a lot of high 5s and “good job!” encouragement
0.5 4.5 9:55 (0:39) no notes
0.5 5.0 10:28 (0:24) we had another downhill / uphill combination followed by a water stop, so I slowed down a little to manage effort
0.5 5.5 10:07 (0:20) on the home stretch, back to target pace
0.5 6.0 10:04 (0:18) last turn *
0.24 6.24 8:51 (0:38) final push!
  • Just before the last turn, I got passed by a mom/daughter combo, daughter looked like she was struggling, mom was encouraging her strongly. We make the final turn and they’re ahead by 20 feet. Over the last quarter mile then I decide I’m not going to let them beat me so kick it up a notch, pass them, see out the corner of my eye that they’re trying to keep up, so I push just a little bit harder through the finish line.

Overall time 1:01:51, matches my watch. At 6.2 miles, it’s 9:57 pace. At my watch of 6.24, it’s 9:54. I’m happy with either!

Heart rate average 147 throughout - highest segment avg HR was 162, between 5 and 5.5 miles, when getting back up to speed. Knee felt great throughout - a little tender, but I’m confident taking a couple of ibuprofen before helped. Plus, I was conscious the whole time of form - hips forward, shoulders back, mid-foot strike, knee flexed on impact, gain speed by increasing cadence rather than extending stride length.

for the 10k overall, 179 of 458
for male, 112 of 189
for M 45-49, 9 of 15; #7 (top half) ran 58:22 [9:24 / mile]. I don’t think I’ll be back to that pace soon, but with concentrated training I bet I could.

Great experience!
