Ive been trying to get some miles in without re-aggravating my knee troubles. so running like 2 miles at a time 2-3 times a week. restraint is not my strong suit

It was a blustery morning, but I was pleasantly surprised it was a flat (two short hills, each about 1 block) out and back course along the lake. I improved my time to 37:14 despite not exercising much due to assorted reasons, and managed to get my son (who also ran the 5k) to pole vault practice on time.

The age groupers came in 1-2-3 from the run club that sponsored the race. I am not a fan of that! Winner of the 50-59 ran 18:30. That is FLICKEN fast! I get it! He should be serving gatorate at an aid a station

I have a short loop (0.79 miles) near my house. Goal this morning was to run 3 loops with a 3 min rest after, first one at 7:50 then negative split the next 2. In previous months I’ve been able to get the first in something like 8:00, but then tailing off on the next couple, even having to walk occasionally.

Did this morning’s laps in:
7:32
7:29
7:26

Realy proud of that. Finally feeling like I have a solid base.

Next goal for this workout will be all 3 under 7:15.

:swear:

Today was the Phila Love Run half marathon, which I had paid $75 entry fee for (fortunately only $75 since I registered a year ago). Then today I decided not to run, mainly for concern over whether the 3:30 cutoff was chip time or clock time. Chip time would be more sensible, but with a 7:30 start time and a statement that the course closed at 11 it sounded like clock time. With 13,000 runners, that it sounded to me like the difference could be signficant, and I had doubt about finishing by 11. Plus I would be getting up awfully early to get into Phila for that start, and the parking I used last year was about $20, so I just bagged it. Just to prove I could do it, I did a half marathon (unofficial) at a state park about 5 miles from my home.

GRRR. Took me about 3:18. Don’t know exactly, since my apple watch died and didn’t even give me a half marathon time. (It does agree I ran a 10K, and says I covered 12.18 miles in 3:00:51. I did walk the rest of the way, at a pace probably about 20 mins / mile, so about 3:18. (I had walked mile 12, at 19:37.)

Had I been doing the actual race, I would have been doing some running in those last two miles. The entire thing, per plan, was going to be alternate running/walking never as much a one full minute running.

And now the super :SWEAR; Had I done the Love Run, with a time of 3:18 (or any time under 3:23:02), I would have finished 3rd in the male 75-79 age group. Certainly attainable, as the Love Run course was flatter than the course I actually did. Only 654 feet of elevation gain where I ran, but even less gain along the river in Philadelphia.

Some risk, I suppose, that I would have gone out too fast and finished in over 3:23. I don’t think so. I did a half in September in 2:51 (good for only 13th place in a 70-74 age bracket).

And :SUPER SUPER SWEAR: it appears the 3:30 cut off maybe didn’t apply to anyone. 13th place (last in the age group) for males 70-74 was 3:51:47. If I had known I would surely get an official time, I would have done the race.

Next year - you will crush it!

In 2025 I would probably crush the 75-79 in the September half, since there was only 1 entrant last year (his time was faster than my age 74 time). Unfortunately I will be away that weekend, since I like that race.

The Love Run next year? Maybe not; my time would only have been third this year, and potentially more entrants. Inclined not to even do it. Weather was great today, but often quite cold, and parking is never pleasant for it. I enjoyed running in the state park more than I would have enjoyed driving into Phila and running there.

Training for a half is good for me, I think, and good for weight. (still iwithin obese by BMI, but much better than it would be without the running.)

Save the $ and run wherever you want. That works too :slightly_smiling_face:

man, I feel great at the end of a longer run where I’ve gotten into the ‘runner’s high’. I can feel it starting to build up about 40-45 minutes in, and then when it washes over you you almost feel like you can’t slow down, even if you wanted to, like there’s some kind of internal dynamo that’s just kicking into the next gear and powering you through the last 10-15 minutes of the run. Felt that today. I think I’m ready to start extending the long runs to over an hour in prep for this fall’s half-marathons.
