I think it’s more the high dew point than straight temperature, that is the issue. Yesterday got up to 69, which would be difficult to run long distances in, especially surrounded by lots of people.

It does seem a bit of an overkill. When I did a marathon they shut it down after 5 hours. In this case that would be 1pm when it’s forecast to be 82. Uncomfortable yes, but well before the temperature goes up towards 90. If the temperature goes up faster than expected, they could have cut it off at 4 1/2 or 4 hours.

Why don’t they just cancel all marathons because they are inherently dangerous?

running in heat totally sucks. i ran boston and it was 80 at the start. it was really hard and I ran terribly. they allowed deferments to the next year, which i didn’t take. (and that would have had me there for the bombs. but I did fly to boston that day and the turning on of the phones at landing was…something)

i was surprised they cancelled the events. and more because they assured people yesterday with warnings and admonishment to super hydrate and go easier running. then at 5am they pulled the plug. I don’t get it, honestly.

pretty much no one wants to repeat Chicago 2007 (0r was it 08?) when they black flagged the course and some some dude died. they underprepared and aid stations ran out of water/gatorade. but with the forecast we had, there was no way they’d have been underprepared today. also the hourly temps weren’t escalating that fast. More like it was going to be 80 after 4+ hours of the race.

increase by 0.1 every 2:00.
goal is 30 minutes, if I have to back down some or 3.0 miles.

finished 3.0 miles in 29:12., that’s a 9:44 overall pace with continuously increasing speed from 5.5 starting to 6.9 finishing. Really proud of this one.

I have a routine I do on the treadmill that similarly increases speed over time: good way to not get too bored (as I am prone to).

That’s a fun idea, I might try something like that next time I’m on a treadmill.

i do this as well. in my head i consider it “boiling the frog”.

sunday -tuesday did exactly that (at hotel). I start at 6.7mph and in the end hit 5 miles in 3845 or so.

i think there was exactly one time in my life when I ran 5 miles in under 40 minutes, it was when i was in damn good shape, was trained up for a half-marathon, and it was the first 5 miles of that half-marathon on a morning with perfect weather and the perfect starting position (wasn’t too far back in the pack that I had to swerve around a lot of others). Overall finish time was something like 8:10 pace, so I obviously slowed down in the second part to something more normal (like 8:30 or 8:45).

I know i am genpop fast. I am at the same time “me historically slow”. Frustrates me in ways that show a lack of maturity in understanding aging. I hope to get some of the magic back by following the track work you and t-roy do.

Went for an outdoor run for the first time in maybe 3 years today. Did a 30 minute time trial so I can figure out my LTHR, and oh man are my legs sore. I’m too old for this shit.

I run on a treadmill, well walk / run on a treadmill semi-often, so it’s not like coming from complete nothing. But definitely not the same.

I’ve done an IM70.3 in record heat in July 2013. It got up to 94 F at noon.
I don’t remember that day (just kidding)

I hear you. I’ve done a number of half marathons, but even when I’m trim I’m huge. Like, I’m fairly slim at 240. So coming from a place of fairly out of shape, it’s a large hill to move that much weight to get to the point where I can run a distance. And my best half marathon time is just sub 3 hours lol.
Currently I’m in week four of couch to 5k and it’s going well. Maybe in the spring I’ll be up to a 10 k run, maybe a half marathon.

My daughter (11) has started to like running. They run the “mile”* once a week at school, and seeing her time get better has been part of the reason she has changed her mind, I think.

I ran with her for her first 5K recently. She got some cramps, so we took some walking breaks, but she was pretty good about not walking too long and going back to running. We finished just under 35:00. She said she enjoyed it, and we plan to run more 5Ks.

.* I don’t know the actual distance, by my son ran 4:20, so it is not anywhere close to an actual mile. My son also told me he could have ran faster, but wanted that exact time, which is a whole other thing.

My daughter did a marathon a couple years ago, she wanted to complete it before having kids. There were people in the run doing 50k and 80k as well. Pretty wild to see people coming in with everyone having completed a marathon, and then continuing to run, because only about halfway done.

Spouse and I were actually at the finish line cheering as everyone crossed, waiting for my daughter so we could cheer her on. I didn’t recognize her at the end, wasn’t paying attention, plus sweaty and wearing a hat, etc so I just cheered and clapped for her like I was doing with everyone else lol.

I went to cheer on a friend running a marathon that went within a quarter mile of my home (I walked the quarter mile to the race course) and never did see her despite standing outside for over an hour and cheering on what seemed like all of the runners in the race (it was only a couple of miles in so they weren’t that spread out yet).
