RIP, the Amazing Kreskin

I saw him open for Penn & Teller for an off-Broadway show back in the 90s.

Hated to see him on the base-paths when he played against my Jays but loved him the year he played for the Jays.

I remember well his long at-bat against Mitch Williams in the ninth inning of the final game of the 1993 World Series. He worked a walk that clearly rattled Williams. A few batters later, Joe Carter hit a walk-off three run home run to win the WS.

RIP Rickey. Leaving us way too soon.

He was with the Mariners for a bit. I remember watching him score from first on a single. Wicked fast base runner. RIP.

Also I’m going to pre-emptively state that the story about Rickey Henderson and John Olerud is a tall tale.

(The story goes that when Rickey Henderson started playing for the Mariners he asked John Olerud why he wore a helmet when fielding instead of the regular cloth baseball cap. Olerud explained it was because he’d had brain surgery due to an aneurysm when he was in college and he did it to protect his head. Henderson responded “Well that’s something because I played with a guy on the Mets who did the same thing.” “Yeah, Rickey… that was me!”)

Funny story, but it never happened. Here is John Olerud explaining it.

Loved this. Thanks for sharing.

Olerud was one of my favourites but I had not seen this clip before.

Yes. I preferred the fictitious story in this case.

saw a quote from reggie jackson claiming Rickey as one of the top 10-12 guys ever.

reggie always seemed like a very proud of himself guy (deservedly, mind you). I can’t say he ever seemed to spend time considering others as in his league at all. and that he just puts Rickey on the top tier makes all the other hype seem somehow understated.

Rickey would have stolen 200 a year in the modern game with larger bases and limited pickoffs.

his call to Harold Reynolds was along the lines of the olerud story but real!

200 is a huge exaggeration. In 1980 he reach base 259 time by hit or walk and attempted 172 stolen bases. The 130 record and the 42 caught stealing.

But he truly was an amazing base stealer. Pretty sure the last time I saw him was his last ever stolen base. He was 44 playing for the Dodgers and was picked off 1st and beat the throw to second. classic rickey.

My brother-in-law who was a big camera buff was there for Rickey breaking the all time record. He has an awesome picture of him swiping the bag that is better than the one they used for the news photos. Still has it framed and up in his house with a copy of the ticket stub.

I grew up in STL, and remember Lou Brock breaking Ty Cobb’s record. I was somewhat sad to see Rickey beat Lou, but eventually just became in awe at how he obliterated it.

The point of the game is to score runs.

Henderson scored more runs than any other player - ahead of some guys named Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose and ALL the rest…

As full-of-himself as Reggie is/was, I see his claim as being on-the-mark here.

Rickey did what he needed to to get on base and to get around the bases.
Not sure if top 12, but easily the most exciting player in my lifetime.
Possibly top 12 best athletes to play the game. For a baserunner, still had excellent power.

Fixed.
Rickey helped a lot. He’s 12th in Runs Created.
Only three above him are not in the HOF for obvious reasons.

i agree with you and reggie.

Bobby Abreu (52) might be the first of that stat not in the HoF, based strictly on stats

I have had, as in caught, a Bobby Abreu foul ball. Wrigley Field 3rd base line seats. I gave it to the kid sitting in front of us. The dad bought me and my wife beer the rest of the game.
