Sad day for those of us who identify Mercer with Bill Mercer, the Vancouver boy who founded Wm. M. Mercer in 1945. The Mercer name disappears today.

I’m in a related name swap. doesn’t upset me in the least, but I get that not everyone coasts as easily as i do.
everywhere I’ve worked has had legacy name angst and moved on from it. except for when I was at willis, but they had recently dropped the HRH part and then bought the naming rights for the building in chicago. so i’ve grown accustomed to the name changes.
And I wouldn’t care about the Mercer change except I have met Bill Mercer’s kids in Vancouver so there is that personal connection.

Lol. After 17 years, all locals still refer to it as Sears Tower. Maybe when the older generation dies off, someone will start calling it Willis Tower.
More lol. I looked it up and the naming rights actually ended in March 2025. So much for the people dying off idea. I can’t imagine anyone buying rights to rename it again after they saw that nobody used the previous name.

Reminds me of my undergrad years where to get into a “closed” class, you filled out a green colored 2" x 6" card-stock paper form, got the professor to sign it, and you could get registered for the class.
We called it “green-carding” a class. And yes, we had fun making fun of the connection to immigration with that term.
About 6 years after I graduated, a relative of my wife’s was attending the same university and we went to visit the relative and reminisce about the campus. The relative was going to registered for a closed class–which was done entirely electronically now–but it was still referred to as “green-carding” the class.

My wife’s nickname in the 1970s was Ms and she still uses that moniker so that tells you how we felt about Gloria Steinem.
