RIP Thread: Sports edition

I would argue for Jerry Rice and might put Tom Brady in the conversation but I wouldn’t complain about ranking Jim Brown as GOAT.

RIP

My most vivid early memory of watching American football is Jim Brown running for yards with possibly three tacklers riding him. He was just that much better and stronger. He didn’t need a hole in the line: he could run over anyone.

I have thought about this type of thing recently.

I would think over any 26 mile course, there are rough surfaces, steps of grates, manhole covers, runners in your space. If you are running alone, or even operating your own wheel chair, you are hyper aware of your surroundings and can maneuver easily.

I can’t imagine the difficulty in pushing someone in a wheel chair

Hum baby, Roger Craig pitcher and longtime manager dead at 93. RIP.

John Uelses, 85, first pole vaulter to clear 16 feet.

I was a huge track and field fan in the 1960’s and Uelses’ accomplishment in 1962 was a BIG story. Uelses used the new fibreglass pole technology so there were some naysayers about his record. Hard to believe that the current record is in excess of 20 feet but Uelses’ feat was considered remarkable at the time.

If his pole was not widely available, then i can see their point, for a few months. If it wasn’t him, someone else would have done it.

Alex Collins (former Arkansas, Seattle and Baltimore)) RB) at 28 yesterday morning.
.
Reading about Collins, i discovered that Ryan Mallet (former Arkansas, New England, Houston & Baltimore QB) died in June while swimming due to rip tides. He was 35.

I didn’t realize he was ill.

I saw that a former teammate leaked news last week that he had brain cancer. It didn’t make the news much because that information was apparently leaked without the family’s consent. You can all probably guess which former teammate would be enough of a douchebag to release news that the family wanted to keep private

Wade Boggs also leaked the cancer news. He issued an apology to the family.
