RIP Thread: Sports edition

Virginia McCaskey has died at the age of 102. Daughter of the Chicago Bears founder George Halas, she has owned the team for decades. Now that ownership gets divided up to other members of the family,

I believe she was the 2nd oldest billionaire in the world until yesterday, only behind insurance magnate George Joseph.

There’s sure to be a moment of silence in her honor at the upcoming Superbowl.

Why isn’t that statue in the top row of the top tier?

George Foreman

I was a huge fan of boxing in the 70s/80s and George Foreman to me was one of the most fascinating stories, going from the dark, scowling brute to one of the most beloved people in sports.

and a true change, not a gimic

Survived by sons…

Lean, mean, fat-reducin, grillin machine

His name lives on…several times.

RIP Mongo:

He was quite the character. Loud, entertaining in a southern, folksy way. He went from Superbowl champion to professional wrestling champion to arena league football champion (as a coach), then to Canton ( Pro Football Hall of Fame). At least he got in while he was still alive, but struggling with the dehabilitations of ALS.

I (and one other GA user here) were at the game at Wrigley field in 2001 when he sang TMOTTBG at the 7th inning stretch, threatened the umpire with physical harm, and then got ejected from the stadium.

Was at 1979 ASG, where he threw out a runner at 3rd, and threw out a runner at home.

RIP to Big Bad Bobby Jenks

Former Chicago White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks dies at 44 - ESPN

Really exciting closer for the 2005 WS Champ White Sox. Threw some serious speed and every once in a while, dropped in a huge looping curve to freeze hitters for strike 3. By all accounts, was a really good dude. Leaving the world way too early at 44.

What a sad story.

This is probably behind a paywall for many, but if you subscribe it’s worth a read:

tl, dr version:
In January his house was totally destroyed in the Palisades fire. Lost everything.
Later that month he got a terminal cancer diagnosis after having suffered numerous health issues.
The family dropped all health insurance years ago as they were healthy and it was too expensive.
They had to burn through their savings for his treatments.
He’s been living in Portugal where his wife is from, signing memorabilia to help get cash
He has young kids
He’d been hoping/planning to attend the 20 year anniversary of the ChiSox world series happening next weekend

he made $26M in his mlb career. if he thought health insurance was too expensive he made questionable financial decisions.

but yes i agree it is a very sad story.

Ryne Sandberg

Would have been nice to have him at second for the Phils in '83 (and beyond).

RIP

As kids, my brother was a big Ryne Sandberg fan and I was a big Ken Griffey Jr fan. One summer, my parents let us get letters / numbers carved into the back of our buzz cuts. He was 23 for Sandberg and I was 24. Random people would go up to my parents and jokingly ask how many kids they had. RIP Ryno.
