RIP - Jimmy Carter has passed

Agree… one of the better post-presidencies ever.

Yeah, in retrospect his presidency isn’t as bad as it was rated right after he left but he’ll never be remembered as a very good president for the reasons you listed.

But he might be the best human being to have held the office.

Carter did produce a peace accord between Egypt and Israel. That was quite significant.

He had quite a few notable accomplishments, but the poor state of the economy drug him down.

The Camp David accords were indeed very significant, probably his most notable accomplishment.

Other pretty notable things accomplished during his presidency:

  • establishment of fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars
  • deregulation of the airline industry
  • deregulation of natural gas industry
  • Salt II
  • Deregulated the beer industry, enabling home brewers to get supplies and kicking off the craft beer explosion
  • Passed CERCLA creating the Superfund to clean up toxic waste sites

He was perhaps the first Green president. He was also supportive of LGBTQ rights.

Nice article by The Guardian discussing only his post-presidency achievements.

agreed. could have said nothing. could have said all the bonkers stuff he says about others. but chose to put out the most decent-sounding thing I think we’ve seen posted from that account (a festivus miracle if there ever was one). with the context it is an extraordinary post

Bets on how long until he flips with a 2 AM scream-Truth about how Carter was a liberal radical socialist?

Or perhaps he’ll keep it classy and just use Carter’s death to grandstand about living Communist Marxist extremists.

I don’t think trump is jealous for any of the accolades being given to carter, which makes him less likely to say nasty things. also i don’t remember carter insulting trump.

trump cares about being a winner, not a humanitarian. and he likes to say nice things about other people so long as they are not against him.

Carter was generally critical of Trump in the few opinions he released about the man. However, his statements were few and understated in line with how most former Presidents behave.

If Carter’s comments make the rounds again due to his death, we’ll see what happens.

Or he comments about the size of the viewership or crowds attending Carter’s state funeral because it is all about ratings. Of course, Trump’s upcoming inauguration audience will be the largest of all time.

Driving home from Paso Robles.
Passed 93 flags on poles.

Only 16 were at half-mast.

Wondering what causes this lack of respect for flag etiquette:

  1. Didn’t know about Jimmy Carter’s death.
  2. Knew, but flag pole doesn’t have a half-mast option.
  3. Knew, but don’t care.
  4. Knew, but need to send a message to Democrats that none of them are worth respecting.
  5. MUUURRRRIKA!!!

You omitted this act. Losers were highly paid Teamsters, and highly profitable trucking companies.

Seems like Carter did more to promote free market competition than any president since Teddy Roosevelt.

Yes, I skipped some other big ones. Carter certainly did a lot of deregulation.

Another big one I skipped: establishing diplomatic relationships with China.

Didn’t Nixon kind of lay the groundwork for that?

That said, with the environmental and human rights concerns… maybe this wasn’t such a good thing.

Had forgotten about Jimmy’s 1977 royal miscue until I read this scathing but amusing article on Prince Edward’s attendance at his funeral.

Hold up. Let’s review the line of succession:

1: William - OK, he potentially could have attended but as Prince Of Wales he also has a crazy busy schedule

2-4: William’s kids - these are minor children who aren’t going anywhere without their parents

5: Harry - no longer a working royal

6-7: Harry’s kids - also no longer working royals (Lillibet never was in the first place)

8: Andrew - also no longer a working royal

9-13: Andrew’s daughters & grandkids - not sure of their status exactly after Andrew’s disgraceful fall

14: Edward - really after the Wales’s he’s the next in line that’s not tainted by scandal

The Crown (so not sure how accurate) had an episode where part of the plot was that the monarch could have no more than 6 adult family members stand in for official events. Princess Margaret was demoted off the list of 6 once Edward turned 18. (Queen Mother, Philip, Charles, Ann, Andrew, Edward)

So for Charles he’d have Camilla, William, Edward, Ann… uh… maybe Beatrice and/or Eugenie but I kind of don’t think so.

Edward’s and Ann’s kids are not even Princes / Princesses.

The Guardian loves any excuse to bash the monarchy.

Yep, it’s very important he attends his wife’s 43rd birthday.

Although he could have said “Darling, why don’t we go abroad for your birthday bash? I hear DC is marvelous this time of year”.

Just what every woman recovering from chemotherapy wants: a trip abroad under the microscope of the foreign media!
