RIP - Jimmy Carter has passed

Yes I assumed this was common knowledge, but it’s always nice to see it back in the news to remind people how bonkers that situation was, and how thoroughly corrupt the Reagan folks were.

Ok. I won’t retell the story about the time Jimmy Carter was part of the US team tackling the nuclear reactor crisis in Chalk River Ontario in 1953 as that is even a better known old story.

I love that story. Honestly we didn’t deserve him as president. I can’t imagine someone that wholesome and badass even getting involved in politics these days.

I just assumed by the way the NY Times framed the story that it contained new revelations. I had not heard the story myself but that is not surprising since my knowledge of American history is shallower than that of the Americans on this forum. However it did remind me of Nixon’s corruptness with respect to the Paris peace talks.

Republicans gonna Republican.

I updated the thread title

MHSRIP. He and Andrew Young the, then ambassador to UN, worked a lot to help sub-saharan Africa.

Can’t wait for Trump to shit all over his legacy.

The initial response was surprisingly decent (for Trump, anyways):

I doubt that it was entirely written by him, but miracles do happen sometimes, supposedly.

Guarantee he wrote none of that. Not a word.

Agree. He will post something heinous within 96 hours, most likely much sooner.

Not him. It has paragraphs.

RIP

He really left an amazing legacy of kindness and selfless service to our country. I wish more politicians would use him as a model.

One fortunate timing thing is that I imagine he will receive a nice state funeral under the current administration

They will probably put up a statute of Mr. Peanut thinking they are the same person.

Just nice that the top story on Canadian news tonight is Carter and not that other former POTUS.

RIP Jimmy.

Jimmy Carter has had the best post presidency in my lifetime. He showed others what you might do with that platform yet nobody followed.

His presidency is more complicated. He was dealt a crap hand, was mostly at odds with his own party, and had some bad luck on top of all that. I can’t rate him too highly as a president as a result, but as a human being he’s way up there.
