RIP - Jimmy Carter has passed

How important is it to make baby-Prez happy that he thinks this disrespect of a legitimate American will make libs cry?

Jackass states (FL, TX) also think it is important.

Carter…last of the New Dealers. Next man up brought the dawn of the Neoliberal era. All packaging, no product as we used to say.

And now that too seems to be ending. Never did have a chance. It sowed the seeds of its own destruction.

Called this.

Trump won’t stand for even a quiet hint of respect for somebody else on his Special Big Boy Day.

He’s the kid who blew out other kids’ birthday candles then cried until he got presents too, no doubt about it.

Side note: Flags were flown at half mast for Nixon’s 2nd inauguration to honor Truman.

Then after he got the presents first time every other birthday would have some presents for him just to keep the peace.

In fairness…ISTR that in the UK, in the transition from Elizabeth II to Charles III, the Union Jack flew at full staff for a day to celebrate Charles taking the throne, before returning to half staff.

If it weren’t Trump, I wouldn’t think anything of flags going to full staff for a day with the inauguration of a new president.

I’m assuming that’s considered proper over there, not a middle finger to somebody’s legacy.

The crassness is the point in this case.

I agree that in this case it’s all about Trump’s ego, and that’s disrespectful to Carter’s memory.

However, in abstract, when it’s not an orange man is celebrating not wearing an orange jumpsuit as he prepares to retake the reins of power… and suppressing my belief that many of the traditions surrounding the flag should be dismissed as idolatry… I don’t think there’s anything inherently inappropriate in directing American flags to be flown at full staff in celebration of the illusion of democracy working, and I do think that stance is supported by the current codification of flag standards in federal law.

Not similar, as Charles is becoming king BECAUSE of Elizabeth’s death.
We have traditions, and T-rump is (causing the) shitting on them

Think of it this way (if we must have all this pomp and circumstance):

  • Flags should be flown at half staff in honor of the passing of a (former/current) head of state.
  • Flags should be flown at full staff in celebration of a new head of state taking office.
  • When the two guidelines are in conflict, the UK seems to hold that the latter takes precedence (briefly) over the former.

And US precedent with Nixon / Truman has been to keep them at half staff.

Worth noting is that like Carter / Trump, Truman & Nixon were opposing parties.

If it weren’t Trump, they wouldn’t have raised the flags.

If we were looking at the start of the Democrats having a trifecta after four years of Trump, I think there’s a decent chance they would have opted to go full staff for Inauguration Day.

That was Nixon’s second term, not a change in administration.

Eh, that’s grasping. It’s an inauguration.

I don’t think we really need to over analyse this. Him not doing the gentlemanly thing is his norm.

The solution is obvious: 3/4 staff

I just saw a video of Obama and Trump sitting together at Jimmy Carters funeral - cracking jokes it seemed. Both sides, way up there, get along just fine. I think they put on the soap opera drama to keep us entertained enough, separated enough, just to make them all stupid richer.

Yes, I think the Clintons and the Bush’s get along just fine, and I think it’s pretty well known that they (the Clintons) were invited guests and attended Donald and Melania Trump’s wedding.

That said, I suspect that from 2015 onwards, and especially 1/6/2021 onwards, there’s a little less friendliness with the Trumps. I mean he was a baby who wouldn’t attend Biden’s inauguration, let’s not forget.

I checked back to Hoover and every sitting POTUS from Hoover to Obama attended the inauguration of his successor, including all the guys who lost re-election to their successor (Hoover, Ford, Carter, GHWB). I’m guessing the pre-Hoover ones did as well. I think even Adams attended Jefferson’s.
