Michael Jackson sang it better, I think.
Some of it is this: “Lots of people walk around with mild mental health problems and lead productive lives. Moderate depression doesn’t get you out of working for a living. It shouldn’t be a reason for an abortion, either. OTOH, if it is very likely that carrying the pregnancy to term is going to lead to debilitating schizophrenia where the individual can’t function, that would be different.”
They think the first is common and the second virtually unknown.
“Abortion of mercy”
“Abortion because poverty”
“Abortion from rape”
However “abortion of convenience” is a really catchy line, unironic props to the person who coined that.
Wow
I’m unsure why they’d re-broadcast this honestly. Huge blunder, was some intern at (checking time) likely midnight told to spin this and they decided to repost the entire thing? That’s your spin?
Would have been way easier, I’m just making this up over like 30 seconds:
“The DOJ has published photos of documents they consider “classified” but also are too sensitive for the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES to have LOCKED UP safely at his home.”
And that took me literally 30 seconds.
And yes that was disingenuous but that’s publicity for you. People will forget it in 2 days but they’ll remember the feels they had.
That is what i am thinking.
Some sycophant that is 100% walking the “these are HIS documents!!! What about Hillary’s emails!?!?!?” line of delusion.
Dishonest and/or an idiot republican senator
60% of Alaska voters voted for a Republican, but thanks to a convoluted process and ballot exhaustion—which disenfranchises voters—a Democrat “won.”
so a dem runs against two reps, and if she wins 40% 30% 30%, he has a logic, if not neccesarily a point.
but it is their fault for one not bowing out.
BUT, then i see it is ranked choice, so he is just full of shit.
He’d have a point if we voted for parties instead of candidates.
Yeah, if my math is right it seems that of Begich’s (3rd place Republican) 53,756 votes:
15,445 ranked the Democrat second
11,222 did not give a second choice
27,042 ranked the other Republican (Sarah Palin) second
47 gave an improper second choice
15,445 is 28.7% of Begich’s voters, and 8.2% of all voters. That’s a lot of Republicans who prefer the Democrat to the other Republican.
The 11,269 who didn’t give a second choice exceeds the margin of victory (which was 5,219), so there is some chance that if they’d made a proper indication of a second choice then Sarah Palin could have won.
However, of the Begich voters who properly indicated a second choice, 36.4% went for the Dem and 63.6% went for Palin. If we assign those percentages to the 11,269 then that would be an additional 4,097 votes for the Dem and an additional 7,172 votes for Palin. A net gain for Palin of 3,075 votes.
3,075 votes does NOT exceed the margin of victory, so one would have to assume that Begich-Palin voters were disproportionately more confused than Begin-Democrat voters in order to conclude that Palin should have won.
And of course since the Dem won a plurality of first-round votes, one would also have to conclude that either ranked-choice voting was proper, or that one of the Republicans should have been eliminated in the primary and not allowed on the final ballot.
a lot of analysis late at night
It’s always twig’o’clock somewhere
A lot of something
ranked choice in every election please!
Thanks for digging through the numbers.
Regarding this group, I like to believe these people understand ranked choice voting. Their votes properly reflect an opinion that they didn’t want to vote for either Palin or Peltola. If a traditional run-off had come down to just Palin and Peltola, these voters would have stayed home.
Yeah, I assume that a lot of them would have. But I also think that this group understands ranked-choice voting better than the public at large, and evidently also better than Tom Cotton. I think it’s possible that some of those 11K didn’t understand that / why they should consider naming a second choice.
No, I don’t think the outcome would have been different if every voter had perfectly understood how to express their preferences. A slight tweak of the margin is all. But it does seem likely that at least a few of those 11K didn’t understand the process… especially given that this was the first time with ranked choice voting.
I’m often astonished at the lack of understanding of facts by the general public.
But after digging through the numbers it seems obvious that the Democrat would have won under virtually any voting scenario, even with perfect understanding / performance by voters in expressing their preferences.
I’m interested to see the results in November to see if it was a fluke or if she can maintain her seat. I’m sure the Republicans are going to put a lot of effort into convincing voters to vote “correctly” next time
If the GOP would denounce and purge all the MAGAs, I’d look at the actual R candidates again.
:ctm:
Well it will be interesting to see who the Republicans run. I’m uncertain of the process to get on the ballot whereby multiple Republicans got on, but one would think the party might try to keep it to only one Republican next time.
Also, Begich wasn’t third by much. What would have happened if Palin came in third? I bet a much higher percentage of her voters preferred Begich to Peltola than Begich’s voters preferred Palin to Peltola.
If he’d have gotten just a few more first-choice votes, he probably would have won.
