Republicans Say the Darndest Things!

Like if one of them throws a Christmas party or gets married he/she can’t invite coworkers? That seems unduly harsh.

There might be a “no shop talk” rule that applies. I’ll ask next time i go.

serial meetings like this are subject to OML constraints. what you describe would not be allowed.

@twig93 social and chance gatherings are exempt. the constraint is any event at which the business of the is being received. so, eg, the entire school board can sit together at a basketball game. however they are cautioned not to discuss actual school board business with eachother or receive info from other visitors to the seats.

i covered it I assume.

Obama vs Trump in 2028?

Nah, Trump will declare him a non-citizen and then he can’t run.

Nah, the restriction still applies for consecutive terms, so it’d have to be Zombie Cleveland.

but the third term wouldn’t be consecutive.
2 and 1 should be the same as 1 and 2.

My understanding is that they crafted it so that once you serve two consecutive terms you’re forever DQ’d. So Obama and W are both out. (Not that anyone was ever suggesting W, but he would be affected in the same way as Obama, which is to say, not at all. They were and would remain ineligible.)

Yes of course it should be, but they carefully crafted it so that it’s not because they specifically do not want Obama running again.

They are just nuts enough to try to ram this logic through.

Musk is absolutely fanning the flames of this with Trump.

Trump is increasingly mentioning going for another term.

They are testing the waters and getting it out there.

This is how autocrats start.

I am afraid that US Democracy is in serious danger.

What stops Trump from declaring a national security emergency come 2028 and not have elections?

Lets keep in mind that they have been using laws from the 19th and 20th Centuries to ram stuff through now.

They are bound to find one on the books that fits their needs.

What we have here is a failure of imagination. US folks needs to realise that Trump is not operating within the normal political playbook. He is absolutely setting himself up to be an autocrat.

I had been thinking it quite likely that Trump’s mental state wouldn’t sufficiently survive until 2028.

That said, we’ve more commonly than not been seeing Musk give Presidential addresses while Trump sits there and maybe contributes a few sentences at the beginning. Trump basically just signs Executive Orders and his press secretary and Musk speak.

Thinking about that and about McConnell freezing and being wheeled around Congress after multiple falls, it doesn’t seem improbable to run him again. Refuse debates, say that he’s too busy doing important POTUS work. Let his surrogates run rallies while Musk controls Twitter and the government threatens and censors Facebook and traditional media for favorable coverage.

No need the elections of 2026 and 2028 will not be fair. In 2026 the R majority in both houses will increase with surprise wins for the loyal R’s in certain districts. In 2028 the elections will be as fair as those that elect Putin every time. At some point they will be promoting easy online elections running through a system controlled by Musk or a tech bro that bent the knee.

States will balk but will find out their governmental power is lost and purely at the whim of dear leader.

I can’t like this but it is too likely the reality

I don’t like counting on this for it to be what saves the US from democracy, but there is a good chance that is what happens. Trump will be older than Biden, and appears less healthy, and its going to happen.

Now, all the nonsense Republicans talked about with fake Bidens - that we will have to actually deal with Trump, and who knows what happens when the void comes.

You can only speculate where we might be now if COVID never happened and Trump carried on a second term in 2020.

I think you may be making an optimistic assumption here.

As Trump declines, won’t the folks pulling his strings gain more influence than they already have?

Hope should be directed at the midterms as being our hope for the ship starting to return to course.

I don’t think so, it is a cult, when the cult leader dies, I don’t believe number two can wield the same influence (then again the cult leader tends to take as many followers as possible with him)

I believe there is a ST:TOS episode about this.
