Republicans Say the Darndest Things!

As someone who culturally identifies with groups of people who have tended to view Washington as an occupation government…well, it’s somewhat vindicating to have “that” aspect of American political culture out in the open.

Not sure I understand?

Consider American history from the viewpoint of the peoples who were present prior to European settlement.

Perhaps it’s time to dust this off:

Scott Jennings was on CNN last night literally claiming that it was ok for the United States to be imperialist, essentially constituting a new “golden age” of America. I’m genuinely concerned for Canada.

Here’s the thing, the US could beat Canada’s military in a few days. But Canadians would sabotage all the useful infrastructure for decades. The US wouldn’t benefit from a conquest, they’d lose quite a bit of natural resources actually.

Trump hasn’t yet thought about sanctions etc. There is nothing to be gained by a conquest of allies other than alienating the rest of the western world.

This Trump agenda is not about national security but national insecurity.

I have been wondering what Canada did to get Trump’s attention. I was listening to his speech and he basically escalated the threat to Canada from.just a tariff to saying he will use economic force to get Canada to be the 51st state. Those are fighting words.

I understand Trudeau is attending Carter’s funeral. I wonder if they will have a side bar.

It’s depressing, but it seems that over roughly one month before even becoming President, Trump has changed America from Canada’s ally, to Canada’s hostile neighbor with significant economic relations.

Canada now needs a war cabinet to deal with USA. I imagine the amount of spying between the 2 countries is going to increase phenomenally.

Ahh, I see now. google informs me that Canada and the USA have a dispute over the territory from way back.

Canada is getting the famous “no permanent friends only permanent interests” treatment.

The jurisdiction of The Northwest Passage is indeed an old dispute and will intensify as the Arctic shipping season gets longer. Trump will probably rename it The American Passage.

The Northwest Passage is flanked on both sides by Canadian islands so I see the argument for it to be considered a Canadian waterway. However Canada does not object to the passage of most commercial vehicles through it. It is the nuclear submarines with warheads we are concerned about.

If you think about Arctic national security and Putin being a good pal of Trump’s then you can’t help but conclude Canada and Greenland/Denmark are the security threats.

Danish media reported Thursday that a series of photos featuring Kirk and Greenlandic residents in MAGA hats was staged. The MAGA cohort reportedly rounded up homeless people from the area—including one person from under a bridge—promising them a meal at the Hotel Hans Egede in exchange for their participation in the pro-Trump photo circuit.

Videos of the trip that circulated on X describe the Greenlandic participants as “the local community in Nuuk,” but several local sources that spoke with DR News described the photographed individuals as “homeless and socially disadvantaged” people who are often outside the supermarket directly across from the hotel where the Trump event was held. “All they have to do is put on a cap and be in the Trump staff’s videos. They are being bribed, and it is deeply distasteful,” Tom Amtoft, a 28-year resident of Nuuk, told the Danish news outlet.

I don’t understand this. There are plenty of places were that would be seen as agitating and have serious consequences. Or was the hope there woilf be an overreaction?

I’m firmly in the camp that the Greenland talk is largely meant as a distraction from how truly awful and unqualified some of his nominees are, as well as the sentencing.
