Republicans Say the Darndest Things!

I don’t think he is correct, just dreaming of a libertarian fantasy world.

  • Causing the markets to tumble is about buying up assets and privatizing assets within a small group of in-group people and organizations. The markets tumble and the government gets to pick and choose which owners weather the storm.
  • “Temporary hardship” for “long-term prosperity” is meaningless marketing language. This is the real sell because it sounds so reasonable. It clicks the switches in your brain that get you nodding along without giving you any plans.
  • Balancing the budget is important but he only looks at spending and doesn’t mention revenue which is half of the equation.
  • Balancing the budget immediately without increasing revenue would require such drastic cuts to spending (over 25% of the budget I believe) the “temporary hardship” would literally kill people, millions of people is a possibility.

If you look at the economic effects of Russia and the Soviet states after the fall of the Soviet Union and the economic effects of the rise of the Third Reich you get a picture of the economy they wish to create. Just think replacing the US government means we can erase $35 trillion in debt that really solves the debt, deficit conundrum!

I wonder which companies will be chosen as the winners in this market tumult and temporary hardship, as the richest man in the world runs his government agency he was given quid pro quo for getting the President elected.

And just to clarify…my comment that “he’s not wrong” was a reaction to the idea that government needs to live within its means.

He’s not eligible for President because he isn’t natural born US citizen.

You’re assuming the Constitution still applies.

Depends on the details, but imo “Temporary hardship” often prevents “long-term prosperity”.

Ignoring the ethical consequences here… If your solution causes a recession that kills employment, productivity, tax revenues, GDP growth, etc. for a decade, it’s probably not the way to prosperity.

But, if you buy puts or sell short, because you know in advance that your policies will cause markets to move a certain way for certain, it’s OK.

So remind me if Trump wins to move my 401K to something a little more low-risk. Like Rubles.

Sounds like the austerity movement that the UK government started in 2010. How did that work out?

But Elmo’s certain he can do it better.

Howard Lutnick, the cochair of Trump’s potential transition team, called out Kaitlin Collins last night on CNN because she said that vaccines are safe for kids. He brought up autism rates, ffs.

If Trump wins, his prioritization of loyalty over competence will make a 2nd term much worse than the first.

Is that supposed to be a bad thing?

I’m kind of thinking that any Republican president in the foreseeable future will be more of an Nth Trump term than Biden and Harris are Obama terms.

I am hoping Trump loses and they have to decide who they are in the next 4 years. If they let Trump try for a third time I would be shocked.

Earlier this year when I checked the life tables as a P&C person, I got that Trump should be dying around 2028-2029.

Given his current mental state, I’m not sure he’ll be competent enough for even MAGA by 2028, if they need to wheel him out to each rally.

Of course, we all know that guy who lived to 93 out of pure spite.

My problem is not Trump it’s his supporters. They have shown us they can go to new lows.

They’re essentially the German AfD in the US.

The MAGA party is foundationally about social conservatism, xenophobia, and Christian Nationalism.

They have eschewed financial conservatism and environmental conservatism. They run solely on pro-white and what they view as pro-“Christian” policies such as being anti-gay people and anti-choice.

I think that when Trump’s dementia becomes too visible to ignore, which will happen before a possible 2028 run, that the sane wing of the Republican party has a chance of reclaiming power. The crash and burn of things like the DeSantis campaign show the limits to running on hate.
