Republicans Say the Darndest Things!

Rick Scott on Hurricane Helene and the imminent disappearance of the Big Bend (although this is scary as well).

“On Wednesday, Florida Senator Rick Scotttold residents that those in the path of the storm surge won’t survive.

“In the Big Bend, they’re talking about possibly 18ft of storm surge,” Scott said in Taylor County. “I’m a little over six feet — that’s three times my height. None of us are living that…You’re not going to survive.”

Ah yes, the intern did it!

TIL: Big Bend is a geographical area of Florida, and not just a National Park in Texas.

Sounds like a bit of election interference by the hurricane…

People in the Big Bend should do their own research and quit letting Big Government tell them what to do.

If only we had abolished NOAA and moved it to a privatized system like under Project 2025.

Think of the profits that could have been made, rather than saving lives. Damn shame.

If we just take a Sharpie and draw a path to send the hurricane somewhere else, all will be fine.

I actually appreciated Rick Scott’s scary warning. I passed it on to my son who is cooling his heels at my sister-in-law’s place in Columbia, SC waiting to head to Tampa. Scott’s warning has persuaded my son to stay put.

Bigger issue for me is why my son wanted to go to the Tampa area but he explained that the Vancouver Canucks have an upcoming game against Tampa Bay. Good luck that that happens!

October 15. Not anytime soon.

Yeah but he wanted to go to Tampa this Saturday and hang out there until the 15th. With all due respect to Tampa that sounds like a long time to spend there, especially in the aftermath of a hurricane.

Tampa will be mostly fine by Saturday.

I remember with at least one storm, the way authorities got a few beach-dwellers to evacuate was by handing them toe tags and asking them to wear them during the storm, to assist with post-storm identification.

Fortunately, Florida’s Big Bend is a sparsely populated stretch of the Gulf Coast.

Somewhat similar tactic from the Taylor Sherriff today that I posted about in the hurricane thread: asking people not evacuating to write their name, birthday, and important info on their arms with a Sharpie to help with identifying bodies.

Apparently no one is talking about the environment any more and how the ocean will rise by 1/4 of an inch over 500 years…

Meanwhile I’m hearing about an ice sheet that may break off and could raise sea level by 65 cm on its own.

ETA: reading in a bit more detail, seems like a next century issue more than a this century one. https://www.euronews.com/green/2024/09/24/a-giant-antarctic-glacier-is-melting-but-scientists-have-found-a-way-to-thicken-arctic-sea

On the other hand, here’s a problem that will likely crop up in most of our lifetimes… Rising sea levels will disrupt millions of Americans’ lives by 2050, study finds | Sea level | The Guardian

We should mine the ice caps for the water.
Then, we mine Neptune.

How did the vampires survive the four years when he was president?

Aren’t they immortal unless they see the sun or something?

Trump seems unaware of that.
