Yeah for sure there are dirt bag groomers of all types no doubt. But right wing Christians seem to want to label anyone they don’t like as groomers without looking in the mirror.

to me coaches taking a knee for prayer are groomers

That idea of grace by faith alone is one of the more confusing aspects of prosperity gospel ism. So like, as long as you agree that all that Jesus stuff happened, you can do whatever you want and still be in heaven because you’re “saved” now? I guess Christ didn’t mean it then when he talked about trimming your wicks and always being watchful and stuff. :hot_beverage: But I worship statues  so what do I know.

Or the part about being able to recognize Jesus’ followers by their acts and deeds.

That’s not the way I learned it long ago. You are thinking of “8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

That contrasts grace and works. But, what about repentance and grace? There are plenty of passages that put repentance first. What Does the Bible Say About Repentance And Forgiveness?

But, what does it mean to “repent”? Certainly a sincere belief that what you did was wrong (God knows whether you are “sincere”). Part of that is a desire/commitment to not repeat that sin.

Note that Paul also asked: “1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”

Thanks for the Scripture examples.

The problem is that a nonzero number of people don’t know that that’s not how it works, so they can’t see that their position is internally inconsistent.

Even if that did put you square with the Lord, the State of Mississippi’s a little more hard-nosed.

Lol. This reminds me of the can that was above my dad’s workbench that he used to keep pencils in. It was “Goldwater” and had a label saying something like “for the conservative taste”. I believe his dad gave it to him as a joke.

Oh. This is it. Barry Goldwater Beverage Can 'The Right Drink for the Conservative Taste' 1964 | eBay

This thread seems good enough for this for now.

You know, it probably wouldn’t hurt for the Republican National Convention to spend a day studying the Ten Commandments, since they seem to have a problem with worshipping a man (violating the First Commandment), who was recently convicted of lying (8th or 9th Commandment) after committing adultery (6th or 7th Commandment).

first I see other religious denominations bringing suit as to the specific wording of the Ten Commandments

Hoping The Satanic Temple has some active chapters down there. I look forward to seeing their tenets posted in the schools, too. TST has done great work in my state.

I assume the law was specifically Ten Commandments. The differ by religion and denomination, so real challenges do exist. It is easier to fight the interpretation so that it is not enforceable, then to fight the actual law

Hard to see how that could happen. Ten Commandments aren’t posted because (not the ostensible reason) a church or synagogue wanted them posted, but because the legislature ordered they be posted. So unless the legislature prescribes the TST tenets be posted, TST lacks a way to get them posted.

We’ve had similar issues in our state. It’s unconstitutional for a law to endorse one religion over another. It should be possible for them to sue the state and get them to either declare that the Commandments cannot be displayed (most likely result) or that other religions need representation.

Our state Capitol has a Jesus nativity display every year next to a shrine to Baphomet.
