That is admin stuff.
So, sometime between, “You’re allowed to vote,” and actual voting, the government agencies in charge of voting (state, I think) need to contact people, tell them where they are voting or tell them to commit to a precinct where they now live. Anyone who doesn’t want to provide that information, well, they can’t vote.
My main point is that it should not be an overly burdensome task to get registered to vote and then to vote.
I think the idea behind registration is to help ensure you’re eligible to vote, are voting once and voting in the correct location.
It should be easy to register but I’m ok with voter registration being a thing that is required… so long as the burdens are not undue.
Also you need to prove you’re a U.S. citizen… non-citizens can get DLs and Social Security cards and other forms of ID and not be eligible to vote.
Should be same-day registration at polling locations. Show up and sign an affidavit that you’re a legal voter and only voting at this location, under penalty of law, then vote.
Where I vote your ballot is separated from your identity at the polling station so that would require a massive overhaul in their process.
Advanced registration is not an undue burden IMO.
Could also go in the TIL thread:
North Dakota does not require voter registration, and Idaho, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming allow election day registration. Maine used to allow election day registration but changed it.
Agree, but some states have purged voter rolls. People that did register, haven’t moved, and showed up to vote have been told they aren’t registered.
In my state you can sign an affidavit and vote same day, same place.
Yeah, some states will purge you if you don’t vote within a certain number of elections. I don’t think that’s the best way to go about it. I believe you can cast a provisional ballot if you aren’t on the precinct list when you.show up to vote in my state. Not sure if they bother clearing provisionals if the race isn’t in doubt, but i will research.

It is a completely unnecessary burden that has no reason to exist
It does not add anything at all to the process except additional hurdles that stop people from voting.
Most people are okay with it, because it is all they have ever known. I thought it was absurdly weird when i moved to WI and found out that advanced voter registration is not required. And when i mentioned that to coworkers, and could not come up with a reason why it should exist , then i came around on the concept.
Process is absurdly simple. Not sure what overhaul is needed.
In Minnesota it works like this
Desk 1 - check if you are registered, if so they hand you a “ticket” that says what ballot you should recieve based on your address and send you to desk 2. If not, they send you to desk 1A to register.
Desk 1a - complete registration then send you back to Desk 1
Desk 2 - hand you ballot based on your “ticket”
Not sure why this process is complicated to people.
There is a perfectly valid reason.
Poor people and minorities are less likely to register to vote before the deadline, whether due to lack of time or awareness of the deadline.
I’m not saying it’s an ethical reason, but it’s a very strong reason.
True
Voter suppression is the only “valid” reqson for advanced registration.
It would be great if people would just come out and say that.
I would never make the claim that registration purges have been perfect.
I do think purges are appropriate. I’ve owned (and lived in) my current house for 9 years and I still get Elections mail for the prior owners. They are both STILL registered to vote at my address. I have reported this to the Elections office repeatedly and nothing happens.
Nine YEARS.
But I know there’s lots of cases of going overboard and that’s not ok either.

Voter suppression is the only “valid” reqson for advanced registration.
Historically this wasn’t the case. Advance registration reduces the possibility of casting multiple votes. Today’s telecomms make it less of a problem, but it is still an issue.

I have reported this to the Elections office repeatedly and nothing happens.
OK, so we know where the problem lies, and the solution is not to purge non-voters.
I think it took almost 15 years for me to be purged from the rolls after I moved out of my parents’ home.
At one point, I got summoned for jury duty by virtue of being a registered voter. I sent in the necessary paperwork pointing out that I didn’t live in that state anymore…but apparently it wasn’t processed correctly. My mother was shocked when someone from the sheriffs’ office came looking for me for failure to appear for jury duty.
(Fortunately that sort of thing apparently happened enough that a phone call and sending a copy of my out-of-state drivers license and a couple of other documents via certified mail were sufficient to get that cleared up.)

Dang it. I so badly want to know what happened in the 2020 election but he keeps not telling us.
I was hoping MyPillow Guy would tell us at his August 16-17th conference on election fraud but he just kept saying, “We have the evidence, you’ll see.”
Anyway, is it Infrastructure Week yet?
