Steven J. Milloy is a lawyer, lobbyist, author and Fox News commentator. His close financial and organizational ties to tobacco and oil companies have been the subject of criticism, as Milloy has consistently disputed the scientific consensus on climate change and the health risks of second-hand smoke.[1][2]
Climate scientists have a political ideology to promote. We need more unbiased analysis from lobbyists for the oil industry.

I think he might be ironically correct. Climate is defined as the average weather in an area over a long period of time.
Well if it keeps changing then I suppose you could say it’s a hoax to suggest that a long-term average is a meaningful concept.
The long-term average national debt also shows little cause for concern. But no one promotes that as meaningful.
Obviously that isn’t the point Milloy was trying to make though.
I thought the joke was even that specific chart has an obvious roughly linear trend.

You said that long term average is not meaningful for any nonstationary variable and gave national debt as an example. National debt is all signal and no noise so moving long term average is not meaningful. Whether it is meaningful for the stock market is controversial. It is meaningful for for climate variables.

You’re digging way deeper into my intended-as-a-joke “analysis” than I ever really intended anyone to do.
That said, no I don’t think it’s especially meaningful to say that on average our national debt is only $42 (the answer to everything, the universe, and life itself) so there’s nothing to worry about. And if you average in enough years, $42 is the correct average national debt.
But to break out the hand puppets some more, the guy said “climate is a hoax” when he obviously meant “climate change is a hoax” so I was just trying to “interpret” his words literally to get them to the opposite of what he obviously meant. It was a joke.
