Cheated, but I just saw some random article somewhere about owls, and there was a sentence that basically said ‘owls are birds,’ which of course they are but I don’t think of them as birds. So once I got bird I remembered ‘owls are birds,’ and got owl. Then I cheated because I know there are barn owls and snowy owls and that’s it.

Had to look it up. However, I was using size words to get a sense of if it’s a small or large bird.
Unfortunately little wasn’t one of my guesses.

I figured out pretty quickly that it was related to disease. But I got a few hits for chronic and acute and I was stabbing around looking for organ systems and body parts. Took me a while to work my way around to the old brain.

poor is what started me on the path. I was thinking more along the lines of unemployment (which was in there), then really got on the path with disability. I’m guessing I never would have gotten disorder if it hadn’t been in there next to autism.

One of the standard words I play is “world” and when I see it capitalized it’s either one of the World Wars or something like the World Health Organization. Well, I tried “health” – 69 hits.

It took me a while because I usually don’t think of something that has a vaccine as bacterial.
Speaking of which, a couple of months ago, the had a different disease that has a vaccine included in the DTaP shot. So in another couple of months, I suppose they’ll complete the DTaP trifecta.

So ‘world’ is one of my common words I didn’t use yesterday, so I led with it today. And there it was, capitalized, looking like it was the WHO, as you noted yesterday, so I played health. Should learn to take your own advice, imo. LOL.

The _. _______ made me try bacteria at guess 3 (after “also known”). I tried a few bacteria “letters” that popped to mind, but didn’t hit c for clostridium. I wasted some guesses until I realized that all I needed was the disease, and not the bacteria or anything else about it. Tetanus was my second guess, then, after plague.

Got quite a few hits with political things like president, party, law, and kept feeling out in that direction. I finally decided to test out some countries and Spain has a ton of hits, and Catalonia was my next guess after that.

I ended up cheating. I got that it was a part of Spain, but couldn’t come up with the name.

The first line looked like it had translations, so I tried all the major European languages. I got lots of hits for Spanish but not many for others. So I figured it was something Spain related. Spain → region → Barcelona → Catelonia.

‘Year’ was the lucky guess, I could see in the first paragraph multiple phrases that looked like the something something of the year, so my next guess was month, and I based on word length, January looked right and ‘first month of the year.’

I got the roman god part pretty fast and tried a bunch of 5-letter gods (but not janus), but it took me a while to get the month part. In retrospect, the month they put at the top should have given me a clue, but I didn’t notice the 7-across pattern.
