Redactle

I saw the in and mm and thought it was describing an object, so that threw me off. I got symbol at 59, but all I could think of was chemical symbols and I could see pretty quickly that led nowhere. “trade to trade” (which I tried when trademark didn’t get a hit) at 96 got me on the path, but it still took a while to realize it was the unit itself that I was looking for.

had nothing until 83, put in 10, realized it was a length, played LENGTH, UNIT, INCH, FOOT

This is the first one in a couple days I solved without needing to come here for hints.

Nice. Not to be a stickler, but don’t you need 2 guesses to solve this one?

it didn’t require unit, but that’s an interesting point. I guess the parenthetical isn’t considered part of the answer.

I believe there was another like that - where the clarifying “subset” was not needed

I solved today’s Redactle (#168) in 22 guesses with an accuracy of 95.45%.

Hmm. Can you not quote a piece of hidden text? It doesn’t seem to let me do it. This was Mathman’s:

I saw a LOT of decimals running around

It’s kind of funny that the thing that got you to the answer fast was the same thing that got me off track.

What’s the optimal number of guesses for a good game of Redactle? It’s clearly not 250, by that point you’re frustrated. But fewer than 10 guesses kind of makes it less fun. You know, I’m planning on wasting a solid ten minutes here.

I feel like somewhere around 80 guesses is pretty good, assuming you get a few good leads along the way. Just spitballing here.

I’m thinking about 50. It depends, I could go through 20 guesses getting the right century. Do I see a path or do I use all my filler words?

By 80 I feel like I was wandering. 50 feels like targeting and solving

Fewer. If I can’t be pedantic, then I’m leaving.

Oh, interesting. So when you guessed foot, it displayed the entire article? I already had the 2nd part when I made my final guess.

I’ve enjoyed both 1s and 150s, so I’m not really sure. 200 feels too big. I’m less fond of those where I feel like I"m just flailing - trying to fill in all the words even though I know they’re not really important to the solution. But that doesn’t happen at the same number of guesses.

And, yeah, I think there are the kind where you think you should get it without the standard words and those where you feel they are definitely needed and I"m guessing how I feel about a particular day depends on which category I think it is in. I’d guess my numbers have jumped as I’ve gone to the standard words earlier (to save time at the expense of a lot of guesses) and my standard word list becoming pretty long - maybe 40 words now?

I’ve wondered that too. For me it’s about 20-80 for a satisfying game. I don’t think I’ve ever let it get to the 200’s, but in the 100’s, it stops being fun. Especially if you’re at a really low hit rate.

It makes me wonder if each puzzle is curated or just randomly selected. It seems like random because some are too easy and some are too hard. It shouldn’t require being an expert on a particular subject

but, I will keep goin until a point I know what the topic is and only cheat if I feel I have exhausted my knowledge in the category. I believe I have done this as early as 27 and as many as 327

Now some of those “vital articles” seemed to be on people that are obscure to me, but maybe that’s because I’m not too up on German philosophers.

What makes an entry difficult, I’ve found, is not necessarily obscurity, but length of the article. Too short, and you’re not going to get many hits with anything. Also, the more generic the concept, and the simpler it is - like toxin - the more difficult I found it.

Cheated, I figured out it was a writer who published poems and non-fiction work, 19th century, German… I tried for a bit but wasn’t really getting anywhere. I’ve heard the name, but couldn’t tell you a single thing about him.
