I ignored Italian and basically concentrated on the number of letters in the name

This one gave me a lot of trouble. I couldn’t think of any cat breeds so I googled it, although I probably would have gotten there eventually. Also, this is the 2nd time I can remember where the subject is an animal, but animal or animals give no hits.

And I should have gotten it sooner. Right from the start I got Wizard of Oz with guesses 1 and 2. Then I filled in most of that bullet and got that it was about Toto jumping out of the balloon, and it took me a minute to remember that it was a cat. It took me a while to figure out “what” cat, though.

I also mentally ruled out animals since ‘animal’ and ‘pet’ didn’t get me anywhere. I got a lot of hits on colors and tried clothing, ceramic/glass, paint and paintings, and got nada. I finally came back to animals with ‘breed’ at guess 199. Cat at 206. Tried breeds I could think of and googled to find the answer. Ugh.

Yeah, I cheated. I just had never heard of that type of fly. But, for me, if it’s a subject I’m not knowledgeable on, if I get to the point where I know exactly what to google to pull up the answer, that’s a satisfactory way to solve the puzzle. I had african fly that causes disease in cattle. Answer popped right up

Early on I could see world war, and I forget what but something made me think it was more manufacturing related. Got animals and disease at 94/95, then a while to figure out it was insects transmitting them. Got ‘fly’ and took a few guesses, and then googled it. I thought tsetse was hyphenated for some reason. Eh.

I got Africa early on, but thought it was a food crop…

had it earlier, but only as two words

Ha. This is one that got hits for animal and animals, which I tried at 40. At 46 I had vector. I tried “tsi” at 60 and noticed my mistake at 68 and tried “tse”, which got a hit in the references but nothing else, so I was a little misled. I got fly somewhere in there, but it didn’t dawn on me to try tsetse until, well, 92.

Well shit, Without in the title wasn’t redacted, so one of my first guesses was borders, but I misspelled it. That just totally threw me off.
This takes me back to Meryl Streep

I was all excited when I saw the title, thinking I’d get it in two. Borders was a hit at #1, but, or course, the expected Doctors wasn’t at #2. I feel lucky to have got it, as I’m not sure I remember hearing about it. But I eventually tried media and freedom and saw it wasn’t quite speech, but got hits, so was apparently close.

Not bad, just took forever to figure out that first word.
It certainly would have been a much tougher puzzle if they didn’t give us Without in the title.
I forget the explanation for which words are included (obviously, “a”, “and”, etc.), but there’s a certain frequency list.
But certain very common words aren’t included, which are the ones I often start with (like “not” – my first guess, almost always. I also use “use” and “used”.)
