Random Thoughts

Looks like my wife’s new passport has arrived; I’ll need to wait until she gets around to opening it to see if it’s Trumpy or not.

However, my online renewal went in like 2 minutes before hers. Odd that only hers was in the mail.

EDIT: Status-checker says that my renewal application has been approved, and that it was “supporting documents” that had been mailed to my wife. I assume that the system is buggy, since we didn’t physically send in anything this time around – it’s all online.

…and new passport is in hand, 11 days after the online renewal was submitted. It’s pleasantly non-Trumpy. The new personal information page is now quite a bit thicker than it used to be, but at least that’ll make it easier to flip open to it.

Wonder how long it’ll be before the passport cards come.

Someone recently posted this elsewhere:

Burden of proof is the obligation on somebody presenting a claim to provide evidence to support its truth (a warrant). Once evidence has been presented, it is up to any opposing “side” to prove the evidence presented is not adequate. Burdens of proof are key to having logically valid statements: if claims were accepted without warrants, then every claim could simultaneously be claimed to be true.

I’m familiar with that and all, but isn’t that sort of axiomatic? Can’t you reject the idea and tell the person that the burden of proof is on them to show that “burden of proof” is a thing?

Did not realize there was a day to honour folks like my maternal grandmother.

I saw a sign in Spanish in the back window of a car today. If I’m translating correctly it said that his house was 100% Catholic and 75% alcoholic. 75%?

Two kids - one is a lush like the parents. Other kid is straightedge. :person_shrugging:

Nice to see Michael J. Fox get the Order of Canada, even though I disagree with his view on Canada-US relations. He has been living too long in the US to see the Canadian perspective accurately.

Made a booking (via booking.com) for some Eco style bungalows next year in Brazil for a trip we are taking to Chiapada des Vaideiros (national park) and Brasilia.

The very next day I get a scam type whatsapp message outlining my booking details and asking me to verify my details or else our booking will be lost.

Booking.com seems to have been thoroughly penetrated by hackers and scammers. I have heard of this scam online but its the first time they have tried to use it on one of my bookings.

Not something you want to be number one in?

Flying TAP tomorrow to get from London to Rio and apparently you can block off seats by buying them (for what looks to be about 20% of the price of a normal seat). So if you have one seat in a row of 4 and you paid £1k for your seat, you can buy up the remaining 3 for £200.

Flight must be super empty as I have never seen that offered before.

Lying flat for only an extra £200 is a great deal.

I read that the drink that Socrates drank as punishment was a ‘concoction’. So I looked up ‘hemlock poison drink’ and the first three results were: ‘Help is available!’ with links and phone #'s for poison control.

Sometimes when paying attention to the order of sock or underwear first when getting dressed, I think of the underwear hygiene thread on the AO, and today it also made me think of that AO poster who mentioned pooping his pants several times.

Next Friday I’m going to a mandarin restaurant for my mother’s birthday. my spouse is away so not coming with me.Mandarin is a chair of Chinese food buffets.

the random thought is that I haven’t been to a buffet in like…forever. Combine COVID and a bit of OCD on my spouse’s part, and buffets have been no go for a long time.

Probably won’t be a match played either….

“President Donald Trump will no longer attend the University of Alabama vs. University of Georgia football game in Tuscaloosa Saturday as Hurricane Isaias threatens the area, a White House official told CNN.

Trump previously said he was going to “let the hurricane” determine his decision to attend the rivalry matchup. “If there is an emergency or if there’s a hurricane, I don’t want to do anything to take the focus off all of the great people that work on those things,” he said.

**Expected to make landfall Friday night on the Gulf Coast, Isaiah has **strengthenedinto a Category 3 storm with winds between 111 and 129 mph.”

Oh no, game’s on. Trump won’t be coming though, based on current news. Everyone in traffic will be thankful for that. Landfall speed was 105. Winds might not even be TS force at kickoff.

There are a lot of rich folks in NYC.
