Canadian Tire has bags of vermite castings on sale. I guess if you called it :worm: :poop:, it wouldn’t sell as much.

This definition of integers (that I got from the internet so it must be true) clearly states that -9 is an integer, and that integers are whole numbers, therefore -9 is a whole number.

I’m telling you the puzzle is a lot more fun if a negative integer is considered a whole number.

Apparently it’s an ambiguous term. I learned it as Natural = {1,2,3,…}, Whole = {0,1,2,3,…}, Integer includes the negatives.

I’ll trust Wolfram to have the best info.

Whole Number -- from Wolfram MathWorld.

Agree the puzzle is more fun with integers, so do it that way.

I think it is. I notice profs tend to make sure it’s well defined upfront, and from any time I can recall, they define things as you did.

There are a few things like that that crop up from time to time in my classes. Another one I see a lot is defining polynomial spaces. The way I do it, and the way I see it most often, is that P2 is for polynomials of 2nd degree or less (which makes it a 3-dimensional space - isomorphic to R3). Sometimes I see it defined as polynomials of degree less than 2, which makes it a 2-D space. Always creates confusion.

In grad school it was always naturals are 1,2,3,…

Whole numbers included 0. (Wh0le includes the ā€œ0ā€.) That was how we kept it straight

My smart watch currently says it’s -0°. Not zero, but negative zero.

Is that just a glitch, or does that imply it’s slightly negative or something?

I would say it is between 0 degrees and the first available negative decimal.

Yeah, I’ve read that -0 implies a temperature roughly between -0.49999 and -0.00001.

I think it’s dumb, but whatever.

Feels like pseudo-precision or thereabouts. I didn’t pay attention until it said 1° so I didn’t see it flip from -0° to +0°. Dang.

the real message is…it is cold enough to wrestle with the ability for the watch to make sense

I mean in some contexts it is potentially useful if being above or below freezing matters and you DO have that level of precision.

But for weather from a location several miles away from where you are, quoted in Fahrenheit where 0 is the freezing point of salt water in the laboratory conditions of Fahrenheit himself, it’s pretty meaningless. You shouldn’t use salt well above 0F, and the aforementioned precision will be lacking anyway.

So yes, pseudo-precision is an apt description of your phone’s weather app stating -0.

Nerd.

We’ve all heard of feminists right? But how come we don’t give equal consideration for the masculinists?

Is this a serious question?

Shouldn’t it be ā€œmasculistsā€?

Either feminine to feminist > masculine to masculist
Or
Female to feminist > male > minist

Seems about right.
