Wow, that was going to be my guess, but nice to have confirmation I was right.

My neighbor sent me a LinkedIn request. They work in an unrelated field and have < 10 connections. Their profile only shows one employer that ended 5 years ago. They are anti-social and primary interest with the other neighbors seem self serving (wanting to borrow stuff or get others to do home jobs for free). They have my phone number.

Why the hell do they want to connect on LinkedIn? This is a weird request, right?

Totally weird - and not even remotely worthy of the Insignificant Signal thread!!! :unamused: :-1:

No different than wanting to connect on Facebook or Myspace these days.

Have you seen LI these days? It’s becoming more and more like Facebook or Instagram every day.

Why do the Oscars still have acting categories split by sex/gender?

Do you think there should me more or less awards?

Just think, if you eliminated male/female, you are halving the number of awards.

With woke culture, I am envisioning a big expansion of categories:

Male
Female
Nonbinary
African American
Latinx
L
B
G
Q
T
?
Mainland Asian
South East Asian
Pacific Islander
Eating disorder–too fat
Eating disorder–too skinny
ADHD sufferer
Deaf
Blind
Had lisp as a child
Once got bullied as a child
Has dyslexia
Has a queer uncle
Daddy issues
Mommy issues
Raised Catholic
Raised in suburbs
Wears glasses/contacts
Doesn’t like sudden, loud noises (please, no applause)
Less than 10,000 followers on IG

But we’ve been told that having separate-but-equal categories is inherently racist/sexist/ableist/omniphobic.

Therein lies the paradox.

Everyone wants to be treated the same, yet everyone wants to be an individual.

But this is someone I haven’t interacted much with socially despite being neighbors for years, mostly a head nod or hello when we both happen to be outside or if they want to borrow a tool.

Yes, it’s a weird request.
He may have clicked the “link-suggestions” without knowing wth he’s doing.
He may have said “WTH, JFG’s an awesome guy. Let’s be FB friends!!!1”
He may be one of those “Well, you just never know when that contact will come in handy!!! yuk yuk yuk”
Also, while you’re at it, let’s get 1,000,000 likes for this soldier’s dog. It will make a world of (in)difference in [someone’s] life.

I qualify for like 17 of these.

Serious answer: There is talk about ending that. But like women’s sports, there’s a feeling that women are at a disadvantage to men – in this case because they are less likely to get “meaty” roles, based on how movies are written rather than intrinsic differences of acting ability by gender. So there’s concern that it will be a lot harder for women to win an Oscar if they drop the “actress” categories. Not just twice as hard (since there will be half as many awards) but more like 10 times as hard.

I’m curious to see how this plays out in the next several years.

I thought they dropped “actress” and everyone who acts in movies are now simply “actors”.

As far as I can tell, Jessica Chastain won an award for “Best Actress” in 2022.

Sorry, looks like the official name is “Actress in a Leading Role”

just give everyone an oscar. Problem solved

I think they should be called an actor and an actrix. And actors and actrices.

I think my dog is no longer afraid of the vacuum.
