Random Political Thoughts

In the U.S. a lot of states have simply started charging electric cars a surcharge at registration to compensate for the fuel tax they’re not collecting. Sometimes a middle step for hybrids.

It might be $100 to register an ICE, $200 to register a hybrid and $400 to register an electric vehicle. Something like that.

They have been discussing charging extra for registration but due to cost of living issues over here in the UK its not getting a lot of traction. They will likely only minimally increase it.

Its only a few hundred £££ anyways, which just doesnt come close to the revenue from fuel duty.

I expect a big political fight because the electric car users will now complain that they are being taxed too much.

Yep, going to be messy.

Hmmm… average mpg in UK is 40-45 mpg… call it 42.5. That’s about 11.25 miles per litre. And the average miles per vehicle is about 7,400 per year in the UK so that’s about 658 litres of petrol per year. At £0.5295 per litre of fuel tax that’s about £358 of fuel tax revenue per vehicle per year.

So… instead of a $300 surcharge for electric cars … make it £350. My rule of thumb is that prices in sterling and prices in dollars are about the same … due to stuff just being more expensive in the UK.

So it seems like the right approximate order of magnitude.

Or start with £200 surcharge and gradually increase it. Something is better than nothing.

Its about £600 for 10,000 miles/year, so about £450 for 7,500

Your mpg is on the high side for the UK (lot of older cars with poorer fuel efficiency).

I pulled it off the interweb, but closer inspection shows it was specifically for new cars, so I accept your correction.

When border security comes up in online conversation, I keep seeing Democrats point to the bipartisan border security bill that Trump told Republicans to kill so it wouldn’t make Biden look good.

Then Republicans counter, “Actually the bill guaranteed that illegals would flow across the border, it was everything that Democrats wanted but didn’t actually secure the border, RINOs in Congress were just giving away gifts to the Democrats, so Trump was right to stop the bad bill.”

In which case, why are you not furious at your GOP Congresspeople for rolling over and doing nothing about the border while giving free gifts to the Democrats? Shouldn’t your Republican politicians be working for Republican goals instead of working for the Democrats? What even is the GOP then?

Just “Trump, me, other MAGA voters, and all the RINOs that we keep electing to Congress to secretly work for the Democrats”.

i prefer to point out that when trump took office in 2017 he had a republican majority in the house and senate.

he promised to build a wall and get mexico to pay for it. within that idea there had to be some broader border security and immigration provisions.

(he promised to repeal and replace obamacare. but when only moved “repeal” without any “replace” it failed.)

It’s one thing to blame recent compromises, but another to ignore when he had all the shine and excitement of the new president and momentum to make big changes - how did he spend those efforts then?

What exactly was the “furor” about? Are tan suits not considered serious or something and he wore one at a serious moment?

I still like the tan suit. :woman_shrugging:

My random thought from this morning. Kristen Welker is not very good on “Meet the Press.” Or maybe the whole show is just terrible now. “The fact is _____” can’t be all you are coming in with against Tom cotton when all he does is say “nah my version is more facty than yours.”

Sounds like what we put schoolchildren through with some dress code provisions. (2024 and traditional school districts are still pushing compliance as the top virtue to be instilled in a school environment. :unamused:)

Republicans have a penchant for trying to make non-issues into issues and often look stupid doing it. Not much different than Trump making fun of Kamala’s name. The base seems to love it however.

It’s tough when the other guy isn’t a complete dumpster fire. You’ve got to find something to talk about for 24 hours a day…

Kamala Harris seems so young compared to Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

But if elected, she would not even be in the top half of Presidents ordered by how young they were when they took office. In fact, she would be the 13th oldest President at the time she takes office. If she serves two full (consecutive) terms she would be the 9th oldest President ever upon leaving office.

(33 or 34 were younger depending on whether you count Cleveland once or twice. He was younger than Harris at the start of both of his nonconsecutive terms.)
