Racial/Ethnic Identity Question(s)

There are actually quite a few Native American with substantial European DNA because a number of the first colonizers in the 1500s and 1600s up and joined tribes to survive when they couldn’t make it on their own.

When it’s time for college I bet you’ll be telling them!

what am I missing here?

I think that you might want to be able to list them as ‘Native American’ on college applications so that they might get more scholarships or preferential treatment in the admissions process or what-have-you.

If I were part anything I think I’d want to know about it. It’s kinda cool.

got excited for a second. But doesn’t look like 1/32 is enough to qualify for anything.

could be a fun story to tell people when you are a kid I guess.

Ill wait till he dies. Then kids wont be tempted to talk to him about it.

it would be pretty pathetic if 1/32 qualified.

what about 1/1024

Anecdote time. I grew up in southeast Kansas, and most people had some Native American blood, typically Cherokee (I’m an eighth Cherokee). We were discussing this once at recess, and one of my classmates who was not-so-smart chimed in that his grandmother was full-blood redneck, making him a quarter redneck. He was being serious, he’d somehow surmised that redneck was a Native tribe or people.

Didn’t you say FIL was half? doesn’t that make your kid 1/8?

Yup. Apparently Morgan Morgan, the first white settler in West Virginia, is one of my ancestors on my other grandma’s side. We had a family reunion at his cabin and everything. (Unfortunately/fortunately it does not appear that this is the same line of Morgans as the JP Morgans.)

So I have indigenous blood and colonizer blood. Which one counts more?

He said FIL’s grandparent was ½ Native American, which would make FIL 1/8, and his kids 1/32, assuming no other Native American ancestry.

Er, his kids 1/16 and YOUR kids 1/32.

Native American seems like a really recessivegene.

Of all the 50/50 natives with whites I’ve met, they all just look white.

I am apparently descended from Abraham Rycken.

I wonder if I should attempt to reclaim the old family farm: Rikers Island - Wikipedia

That took me a second too, but “He” is LuckyHat. So LuckyHat’s FIL is 1/8 and LuckyHat’s kids are 1/32. (Unstated is that Mrs. Hat is 1/16.)

I think NRM’s post was correct as written.

NRM’s kids are not in the discussion though… we have no reason to suppose that they are 1/32 Native American (although perhaps they are). So your post is likely, but not necessarily, inaccurate.

Why, you could just grab a cab there right now!!! I just Google mapped it - 10 minutes!!

And what time are you finally gonna get home tonight???

I just boarded the flight and it is due in a bit after 10:30. LGA-BDL is basically just a quick up-and-down. We’ll probably spend as much time taxiing as flying.

I don’t live too far away from BDL, and I’m normally a night owl. Just the same, I probably won’t have my camera on during the morning team meeting, as I may roll out of bed a couple of minutes before it starts.

Note to self: Reconnect work laptop and log into the VPN before I go to bed.

I am a descendent of a witch.
That should get me something.
