Yeah, I would love to be less dependent on an activist, unelected, partisan, judiciary.. appointed by a corrupt minority elected president and gated by a corrupt minority elected senate… but here we are now. :). Counting on them to do the right thing.
I don’t understand the powers that made Trump choose federalist society judges over his own son, but I’m glad they exist.
Makes me want to go back to a less democratic america, where the senate and POTUS were also not chosen by the people.
Ps. I’d say the conservative side of the SCOTUS also has a terrible tendency to legislate from the bench, just about different things, though maybe that’s for another thread…
I think there is a limit as to the shenanigans that Republican Senators were going to tolerate. Granted, it is an insanely high limit, but I think that appointing his son to the SCOTUS would have exceeded it.
I don’t think that Murkowski or Romney would have voted to confirm in that scenario… they only confirmed Barrett because she actually IS reasonably qualified.
Gardner, Alexander, and Tillis were other names that were thrown around as Republican Senators who might possibly vote “no” on Barrett, and although they didn’t vote no on Barrett… Trump nominating his own son may well have pushed at least one of them over that threshold too.
Yeah… In a sense, it all comes down to susan collins, who in turn is just listening to the median voter in Bangor, or whatever… But the median voter in Bangor would let trump do almost anything and did gladly vote for him again, and is ready to reject collins when she stands in his way on any issue.
Of course “his own son” is on the extreme side, but one could easily imagine him selecting a bill-barr equivalent.
Does the average Bangor really care about decency or qualifications. No, obvious not. The Federalist Society does. But how does the Federalist Society speak louder than some guy in Bangor?
Unless he has the military in the Oval office I would assume the Secret Service would escort him out if necessary and I also doubt he would want that last image
I would assume most people would hate him, especially those who work for him and he treats as less than human, but shockingly there is some loyalty or fear - so while I want to agree, I am not sure
this. secret service have had to deal with him for 4 years. no way they like him. i doubt most republicans like him either, but for them it’s about their own power.
Yeah, I’m unhappy with justices picked by the Federalist Society, but I did think they were likely to be real justices, and not toadies. I’ve been expecting them to shoot down stupid lawsuits.
Yes. There are some armed branches that may like him (The Federal prison guards, maybe) but I’m pretty sure the secret service hates his gut. They will do their job carefully and properly, because it’s their job and they take a lot of pride in that. No way they will violate their oath to the constitution for Trump.
