Political truths that are worth sharing but aren’t funny

There is a local story about a restaurant that hung a banner that said on one side of an American flag “Jesus Is My Savior” and on the other side “Trump Is My President”. So it received a bunch of hate posts on Instagram. And then when word got out about that, it got a bunch of “love” posts, although the ones that have made it into the press have stuff like “hate has a home everywhere, particularly wherever leftists live”. Fun times.

I went looking for the source of that quote / I was curious about whether that was an accurate quote.

I didn’t find the source for that particular quote, but I was introduced to a related column Asimov wrote in Newsweek in 1980 that still seems VERY relevant today.

Great read! Thank you for posting it.

Asimov was brilliant and, as you say, still relevant.

I smiled at the reference to Adlai Stevenson in the article as my FIL was a big fan of his and campaigned for him even though he knew he didn’t have a chance because Stevenson was an intellectual.

I saw a few of these posted on Facebook. They’re effectively preparation for “See how much better things were under Biden/Harris, dumb*sses”, although they don’t explicitly say it:

Mark this day. November 7, 2024
Stock Market 43,729.93
Annual Inflation 2.4%
Unemployment 4.1%

Still, now that it I’ve got it, I think I’ll save a copy for future comparison. fwiw, I checked and the values are correct.

Should add:
Trump’s Estimated Net Worth.
Musk’s Estimated Net Worth.
A few other important stats that I’m trying to think of.
Deaths from once-commonly vaccinated diseases?
Price of milk, eggs, flour, sugar.

Why isn’t “trisyllabic” trisyllabic?

I’d considered adding the price of gas, but that varies so much by region, by season, by refinery or pipeline upset, etc, etc, that it seems like it’s not a very good measure.

You could track a couple of the more interesting CPI sub-index values – the actual indexes, rather than the implied annual rates of changes – in lieu of “price of [whatever]” values.

(If you use the CPI sub-indices…that sets you up for relatively easy comparison against historic presidencies.)

Doesn’t matter, really. If people didn’t understand that the economy, other than inflation in 2021/22 was pretty good over the Biden/Harris years, they’ll also likely not understand any measures. That is, if they already think things are sht, they won’t notice if things really turn to sht.

Price of brent crude?

That said, that one might do well under a Trump presidency.

Is it the left that’s being depicted as an ass?

What if IFYP?
